Cleaning up my wheels???

I saw a thread like this before a while back, but the wheels where diffrent. These wheels have been sitting in the sun for a while and it seems the clear has burned up. I tryed wet sanding them with 800 sand paper and no use. I used 500 and it made a little bit of difrence. Here are some pic's! Any suggestions would be greatly apriciated.

Start with a lower grit like 120 to get the clear off. Then work your way up to 800. Or, you could just use stripper to get the clear off, but it'll take the paint off too. That's the easiest/fastest way to get them shiny again, but you'll have to repaint the red.

Do a search. There are tons of threads on removing clear coat and repainting the Z28 rims. Look up polishing those rims also as that will be the best look. And there is no FAST way to do this. Get some Aircraft remover to tremove the clear coat. And the sun has not burned the clearcoat. That clear that GM used is very, very thick and tough. Trust me it's still there. What the sun may of removed is the paint, especially if it looks pink. But once you remove the clear and polish them you can repaint the rims and it is very easy to do. Plus the final look will make the time involved well worth it. Here is a pic of mine when they were finished.

I sanded mine 120-220-320-400-600-1500 and Duplicolor wheel clear coat. Took about 7 hours per wheel. Pontiac salad shooters were easier to sand than yours and my painted areas were in better shape. I'd recommend the chemical stripper for your wheels and repaint the red.

If your wheels are pink, is there anythign that could bring the color back? Or, do i have to redo the wheels completely? Thanks

Re: Cleaning up my wheels???

I get mine at Home Depot. This is the best stuff I've found for stripping wheels. I've tried just about everything. I usually use 2-3 cans per set of 4 wheels when I'm doing stock GM wheels. It's about $7 a can.
