92 25th rs rod project begins

Well it begins sort of, it actually started about a month ago when I got this thing. Right now I am focused on collecting the last few interior pieces I need to convert the factory tan interior to black, getting a running ac system going(it's hot here in Atlanta) and am working on paint. I am open to input on the paint right now, I had a 89rs v6 for my first car and am debating getting nastalgic and painting it factory charcoal gray, then again I could paint it with house of kolors kandy base coat and if I were to go that route I would go with either Tangerine or cobalt blue. I am going to do my own form of a rally stripe on the car too no matter what color I go with. The idea that sticks most in my head right now is cobalt blue with a rally stripe painted with alsa eclipse paint. When the paint is cold aka at night or in the garage it is black and when in the heat or sun it is white. It changes colors, I think it would be bad a** to have a blue car that one night has a black strip and the next day it is white. so what do yall think? Oh yeah and I bought the car with a 334 that is built pretty well too. after paint I will dyno it just to see how disappointed I can get with the numbers. It is 60 over, forged, stroked, camed, single plane, carbed, with headers, purple hornies, no cats, and side exhaust. At least it sounds like a beast.

Re: 92 25th rs rod project begins

So after all day I have the body completely in primer and the heavy body work done.

P.S. does anyone want a real plastic welding write up? some time this week I am going to weld the front and rear spoilers. There seems to be a lot of questions about this, and I do this almost daily. If anyone wants to know I can show you the right way to do it with filler rods and all. It's up to yall, if someone wants it I will take the time to take pics, or if you have any other questions body related I will try and show you as I work on the camy.

Re: 92 25th rs rod project begins

So I'm going to get a little crazy here. I like the idea of hawks 5" spoiler but I think it could look a little better. so I am going to glass my own and mold it into my 1/4's and deck lid. I am trying to loosely follow hawks design but bring it around a little more like the late 70's trans am. I am also going to experiment with how I can make the back side of the spoiler have a little more shape, I think that is where the hawks design failed most. the basic concept of this build is to take the factory spoiler (lower design) and use this as the base for the mold then use a hard foam and card board as a filler to get the basis for a shape. after all of that I'm going to use pottery clay to make my final design shape. In order to glass the surface I will cover the surface with aluminum foil and duct tape for a slick surface to glass Once I am happy with the shape I am going to fiberglass the top surface once completely after cure I will remove the fiberglass mold and discard the clay and foam, reinforce the single fiberglass layer, and mold it to the car. The supplies have cost me about $125 and I don't have to pay for my own labor so I think it is worth it for something that is unique. and as for the poll up top... I already have the cobalt ordered

Re: 92 25th rs rod project begins

well after fooling around for an hour with card board(bad idea). Then making a huge mess with hard green foam(didn't work for sh*t). I finally came around to trying clay and OMG if anyone ever needs to prototype something CLAY CLAY CLAY! The stuff I got was only $30 for a 24lb block (hobby lobby) it has covered 3/4 of the surface I need to make for the spoiler and the stuff works wonderfully. The design is in it's infant stages. I'm mostly just trying to get the material on there. (the duct tape is there just to help seal the surface until I can work on it again)

mine is going to be much different. I know it is hard to see where my design is going from pictures taken on a camera phone at 12pm on the dark side of the shop, I will try and take some more tonight, unless one of the guys abducts me into going out tonight I should have the design down tonight. I am trying to bring the wing down over the taillights on the sides and have a large sweeping shape to the wing. it will be very different. does anyone know of anyone making a side exhaust exit through the fender of the side skirt? particularly the side skirt?

Re: 92 25th rs rod project begins

well here is the final design b4 glass. hope you like it. i made it a little shorter, and after putting the fender and skirts back on I hit the design I really was looking for, now lets hope everything goes smooth with glassing this thing. Just for the sake of telling everone, I am going to try and let everyone in on this build, the biggest issue right now is the fact that this thing is stuck to the car, and with that said glassing this with a large overhang is not going to be easy. I have thought of vacuum bagging it but I can't see getting a good seal. The other big issue is that to get the clay out of the mold (it has hardened considerably) is to use a drimal tool to cut the fiberglass in two and then reconnect it. I might not have to do it but I think I will have to. I also have to seriously reinforce this thing, it has a huge angle to it, and I could see it having some serious down force. I made it for looks mostly I think I am going to end up with a strong functioning piece.

Re: 92 25th rs rod project begins

So I am getting indecisive about the paint again. I ordered the blue but I did not pay for it yet. so here is a little bit to help yall help me. these are the choices between the blue and the gray, tangerine is out, and I have set a link to a youtube video of the color change paint that would be the stripe on the blue, if i go gray I will only do a black stripe I think that a color change stripe on a gray car would look bad. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4dT4L...eature=related

Re: 92 25th rs rod project begins

ok so I used walmart fleece on top of aluminum foil and duct tape as the base for my resin. The fleece is because it soaks up the most resin, and I used the tightest thinest stuff they had. The aluminum foil and duct tape are not porous and act as a mold release when the fiberglass is done, so I can get the clay out smoother. I tried to get the cloth as close as I could and made it butt up to itself instead of over lapping it, this is because I can always reinforce the back side but I do have to finish the top side and overlapping is a pita. to make the cloth stick to the aluminum foil I used head liner adhesive (my buddies idea) and that was the smartest possible way to make this work. so far I am two batches of resin in and have one more to have the top surface done.

If it came with a warranty then I would lol. I kind of reminds me of a 69's wing with the shape and size of it sitting back there.

Oh, and I use photobucket.com to store my images. Very easy.

Looks real good man. I dont like the spoiler to much but thats me, I think it sticks out to far side to side. But its different and that makes it cool.

Ide go for the orange. You dont see many 3rd gen Camaros that are orange. That why I picked that color for my project.

Keep up the progress, I will be watching for ideas for my build lol....

92 25th, winging it (detailed thread!!!!)

well it's sunday and that means the last funday of the week. I'm trying to get as much as I can done. I have a lot to do for work this week. So I might not be able to get to this for a few days. I have a few pics though of how it is coming along. so far I had to glass 4 batches and about 3/4 of a gallon of resin. I managed to get cut up a little bit removing the thing but I did get it off without cutting, so that makes me happy. oh and it weighs in at 4.6lb so far, I need to do a lot of reinforcing on it, but that is .3lb less than the short factory spoiler! at 5x the size of the factory spoiler I think things are going really well so far.

Re: 92 25th rs rod project begins

so the best way I could retain shape was to use long wood screws, they hold it in shape pretty well. and it makes a great Canadian mosquito killer.

and as to your statement sleeper86, some of the pics are a little misleading as to the width but this thing is well within the factory 1/4 flares. I was very conscious of the width, just wait until you see it painted and done, see if you think it is too wide then. I will give you the fact this thing is massive, I was going to cut it down more but everyone that saw it said leave it alone so...

Its lookin good, I see you yanked the drip rail to. Coming along very nicely. I got mine painted, I kinda rushed getting it done because I wanted to get into the motor and trans part.
I also just finished swapping a TH350 into it about 2 weeks ago.

Keep up the good work. Cant wait to see the finished spoiler, looks like alot of work went into it so far.

Re: 92 25th rs rod project begins

Well to anyone who might care, the project has continued. the spoiler that is in all the other pictures was scrapped. it was ruined when I took it off. It had not cured enough to really hold it's shape enough. The second time around I built reinforcement channels into the clay so that there is more structure. Over all it came out really nice. I just attached it to the window and have to make a few adjustments.
