repainting section of new paint job
recently i got my camaro painted black on top of an old white body. i'm getting the 91-92 high rise spoiler and under the current spoiler it'll be white and i need to know what it'll take to fade the paint into the current paint, and fade the clear coat
figured i'd weld the holes shut from the old spoiler first
then smooth that out with filler
then sand the white with 420 grit i have laying around, could use 600. then i don't know how far into the black part of the car to sand. would i use 600 grit on that clear coat, spray the white part black with paint slightly overlapping the black, then clear over all of it. then what? wet sand with 2000 grit or so and what would i buff with?

Re: repainting section of new paint job
because it is such a small area i dont know if you can fade or not so i think i would just plan on re painting the whole deck lid. I would definatly weld the holes and use some body filler over them. as far as prep I would say sand with 220 to make it all flat. then sand with 420 to make it smooth but not glossy, then use some sealer, paint and clear on the entire surface. i am just a novice my self so dont act on what i say but this is probibly how i would go about it.

If its just on the deck lid...repaint the deck lid. Its so small. By the time you go blending, you'll be painting most of it anyway...

what about the sides of the car where the spoiler end pieces are. i'm not trying to repaint the whole side of the car, i need to fade it.

Re: repainting section of new paint job
you have an rs Im assuming with the spoiler that goes down the quarters too, correct?
1. weld the old holes up
2. bondo
3. sand bondo
4. go about 6-10 inches from the holes (each direction) and sand with 400 grit to get the shine gone
5. prime the areas, when spraying to make sure you end up with no line, move the masking tape back an inch or two after each coat (remember to start 2-3 inches inward when first masking)
6. wetsand with 400 to smooth everything
7. base and clear. again when spraying do the same thing as you will with the primer so you get no tape edge.
8. wetsand with 1500 and buff

3. sand bondo

you cant blend black...you have to paint both quarters and the deck lid to make it look anywhere near decent. id keep the regular spoiler...i did...and i work at a body shop and could do it in my sleep. jus not worth it in my opinion.

Re: repainting section of new paint job
Charged is 100 percent correct...Especially on black, to "burn in the clear", especially in these days of high solids clears, is not a good idea. The burn area will look ok for a while, but it will fail eventually. This stage really should have been planned before the re-paint.
