body removal
body removal
I'm looking to start my firebird project from the frame up. Its a 1991. The engine and tranny are already out of the car. The interior is striped out except for the dash.
Can anybody give me some tips on removing the body from the frame?

Are you serious? I'm not trying to make fun of you, but it's kinda amusing that you bought the car and removed the engine without yet finding out that these cars are unibodies... the body and frame are one unit. In effect, there is no frame. The front and rear sub-frames are welded right to the body.

yep, no frame, you can however take the subframe off, I believe its just bolted on, atleast it is on new cars.

Nope, can't unbolt the subframe on 3rd or 4th gens, I do believe you could on first and second gens though. You can however unbolt the front k-member if you'd like. As was mentioned above the front and rear subframes are welded in on these cars, the only way to remove them is to drill out all the welds or some other method of cutting. Tmic, can you give me an example of a "new" car with a unboltable subframe? By subframe I mean the actual subframe, not a k-member, not saying you are wrong I just can't think of any off the top of my head and I work on all makes and models 6 days a week..

I know alot of new cars have unbolt-able front subframes, just this week I've done 2 ford tarus's and a ford escort (I R&R transmissions, not just fords, just been a crappy week lol) and I've dropped the subframe on each one of those.

Re: body removal
You're confusing k-member/cradles with subframes. The subframe is what they bolt to. They are also unboltable on our cars, however the subframe is a welded on structural part of the body.
