What to d with Rust

Okay I have recently bought a 91 RS. The problem is, the guy we purchased it from bought it from a northern state and has rust holes in the hatch and under the rear bumper. I am new to working on cars so I am not sure what to do about this. I will post up some pictures when I get a chance to take them. Keep in mind though, I bought the car for $800.

Re: What to d with Rust

All depends on the rust each situation is unique some times its as simple as sanding the paint off then grinding the rust till its gone primer bondo and primer again.

I like to cut the rust out and weld some new steel in when ever i can, i'm not a big fan of fillers but some times you have to.

I'm no expert but post a few pics and i'll help to the best of my knowledge.

I would sand blast instead of grinding only because I think its easier to get all the rust out of the surface than it would be to grind out possibly causing more damage. As long as there isnt a hole sand blast or grind, then self etching primer , bondo or fiberglass body filler, then primer again with a quaility primer

I agree sand blasting would be a better idea then grinding/sanding the rust off but not many people have sand blasters and just about every one who does what we do has a grinder/dremel/sander, in the end all that matters is you get it down to bare steel no rust what so ever and protect it with a good primer.

The only problem is, there are holes. I would say anywhere from quarter sized, to golf ball sized and I am sure I will have the replace the rust areas. The hatch is my main concern, since when it is opened, the spots are noticable. And I think the only thing to be done is to grind/sand out the holes to try and make it look neater. I will try my hardest to get the pictures. I am not good at photography so I am waiting for my Fiance to take them.

I'll get some pics of it up sometime tommorow afternoon. It's not as bad as she thinks it is, it's not causing any problems, besides appearance when the hatch is open.

Sounds like you have no choice but to get rid of the rust and weld some new steel, if you cant weld new steel in getting rid of the rust and protecting the area with a good primer is better then just leaving the rust there.

I have some nice hatches laying around here. Perfect shape with no rust or problems (Arizona cars) I have the wing style, IROC style or just plain.

Also I have some nice tail panels I could cut out for you

Re: What to d with Rust

The only red one I have is off of a '88 sport coupe so it has the mounts for the small wing. The mounts similar to me as the '91-'92 F-40 style wing but I don't know if they are the same.

Besides the fading of the paint it looks to be in perfect shape.

Re: What to d with Rust

I would prefer to stay original with her car other than aftermarket mods. So if you get ahold of a 91 rs hatch, red, let us know.
