hood louver/power blister compatability?
hood louver/power blister compatability?
I got a hood from the junkyard without the louvers. I bought some louvers off of Ebay and they don't fit. Everyone claims they are the same but they aren't! They are too wide. See included picture. I'm thinking about getting some power blisters for the '91-'92 cars but before I waste my money I want to know if there is anyway to tell if they will work.

Re: hood louver/power blister compatability?
I have a 92, the "power" blisters (LOL) are the same shape/size as the Iroc vents in the pic. Also I believe the blisters mount on a flat RS style hood, not positive though because i've never bothered to remove them and look.
also if you do end up getting the blisters, paint them flat black! much better looking than body color IMO

Re: hood louver/power blister compatability?
the hood you have is the early eighty's iroc hood it never had louvers on it. The blisters and louvers are only interchangeable between hoods that came with one or the other.
blisters will not fit a non-iroc hood from what I was told, you can buy reproduction blisters that will fit a flat hood. Cant remember who sell'em.
By the way blisters are wider than louvers, I had both on my car first louvers then blisters. Had to get the stripes widened by 1/2' or so to cover them.
You need a different hood.

Yes but no... You do need a different hood if you want to use the blisters or the louvers. The hood is identical for ALL IROCs and for the 91-92 Z28 with the blisters. The hood you have is from a 82-84 Z28. They were just dimples, no louvers or blisters. The blisters are a little wider but the hood is the same, they are interchangable. Either scrap the louver/blister idea or get a new hood.
For the OP>>>
What car do you have? I forget if it was in the OP. If it is an IROC, get the right hood and put the louvers, if not use that hood and scrap the louvers unless you want to find another hood.

Re: hood louver/power blister compatability?
your option -- repair the 82-84 Z28 blue hood in your pic (fill in the drilled holes) and leave it stock. (without any louvers or blisters) just the plain dimples.
-- buy another hood that will work with louvers/blisters (85?-92 z28/iroc)
-- if you have a stock flat hood buy reproduction 91-92 blister (not sure how good they are made or look)

By the looks of this car I could possibly weld the holes up in my hood and paint the area black. I know it wouldn't be period correct for the year my car is but does anyone think it would look too stupid?

lots of guys like that hood and use it for what ever year car they have. It all depends on if you like the hood.
I think it would look good just paint it with black, like in pic.( with black headlight pockets if you don't already have) What year/model car you got?

Re: hood louver/power blister compatability?
EARLY 82-84 hoods weren't steel, but a type of fiberglass. SMC, I believe. Surface Molded Compound? Towards the end, they switched to steel because the SMC hoods had a tendency for the layers to separate. The person would literally be driving down the road & only the top layer would peel off & fly up. The bottom layer was still there & latched shut. "But officer...My hood didn't just fly off...sorta. It WAS shut. See?"
Is yours a steel or 'glass hood?

Looks like it's smc but its hard to tell from the pic.. Looks to be in good condition too.. even if it is metal.. If I were you I'd fix the holes, weld or fill depending on what it's made from, and run it like that.
