1989 IROC-ZL1

I am 17 years old but may I say that I am no stranger to restorations. My dad runs a proffessional business and we have restored manyacar but this is the first time I will try and do it myself. I bought a 1989 iroc-z for $2000 it has a 305 tbi which is extremely annoying but Im keeping it a numbers matching. The first car I have had any part in restoring is a 1969 zl1 camaro so this iroc is going to be the dedication to that car. I have pulled the ground effects off and put a set of 92 ground effects on it simply because I like the look and I want this car to be the most unique third gen of all time. I have converted the 5.0 h.o. breather to fit this car and I have all the air hoses to it but again I wanted something different so I also added a functional cowl induction which took alot longer than I originally thought it would because the hood to breather seal did not fit correctly so I took a smaller cover to the breather put a new decal on it and there you have it. We have built the motor well as much as you can build a 305 without loosing airconditioning. It has stainless steel electropolished corvette rally wheels. Thats all I have done thus far but I must now tackle the interior which is why I have this post I was wondering if any of you have any unique ideas? I have already bought a dual gate hurst shifter but I have not installed it yet. If you have any ideas let me know, AFTER ALL ITS ABOUT DARING TO BE DIFFERENT.

If you want it to be the most unique third gen of all time, you're going to need something other than a 305 TBI. If you are changing the body around don't worry about keeping it "#s matching". It's a 3rd gen, build it how you want it. Don't worry about it being worth a million dollars. If it would really make you feel better, you can grease and wrap the 305 TBI and store it somewhere safe

Cool to see another young kid on here into the restorations of these things!

I turned 18 in september, i built my '89 iroc-z without a real theme to it. I just sorta did things as i wanted, but ive sorta moved the theme to being a '02 SS car in thirdgen skin (LS1, T56, 4th gen interior)

As for the ZL1 theme. I think the old school badges are badass. Along with some custom grill that somewhat links to the old ZL1.

Something like custom console gauges would also be a real cool thing to tribute the 1st gens.

You could try doing some ribs in the 1/4's like the 1st gens. That would be another cool thing.

good luck on your project, i wouldnt exactly worry about #'s matching on a third gen though. if you can find a wrecked right hand drive camaro from australia or something thatd be pretty sweet. check out this shop they have neat stuff but theyre in japan.

Re: 1989 IROC-ZL1

Theres actually quite a few people who are under 20. I'm 16 and have really turned the car around.Whole new interior, soon to be paint, and then an engine. I Think its really awesome how us younger people actually are restoring them and making them good cars. I hope your build turns out to be a good one because It sounds like you have determination. lol its what it takes to really do one of these.

On the numbers matching part, I think within 2-3 years people will start caring about the numbers that match and will really look for it. The way that late second gen cars have taken off lately, I truly believe that our Cars will be the same.

The best advice I can offer, is to have a set plan in mind before starting. dont just go out on whim and buy things as you go, becuase you'll spend more money by going back and replacing things that now dont fit with what your ever chaging mind is going through.

Re: 1989 IROC-ZL1

ditch that TBI 305...it doesn't help the value

I am just curious of your statement

"I have pulled the ground effects off and put a set of 92 ground effects on it simply because I like the look and I want this car to be the most unique third gen of all time"

so its an 89 w/91-92 GFX---how does this make it unique? Everyone would assume its 91-92? Sry I don't understand that part.
