$50 fenders

Has anyone here bought a fender from Napa? They are only $48 + tax each. This seems like a really good deal. Almost too good...

Re: $50 fenders

I don't know personally what fenders Napa has up for grabs at $48 each but,if they are the aftermarket chinese repops(which sounds to be true by the price) I would say leave them on Napas shelves to rot!
I bought one of the said repops for my car and the fit was absolutely hideous!
There was a HUGE gap between my perfect door and newly fitted fender around the center bodyline.Needless to say,a trip to the junkyard scored an original fender for $25 and the repop one by now is probably an assortment of clips for the 2010 camaro!LOL!!

Re: $50 fenders

that's what i thought too. The thing is, i'm on a small budget, and $50 is about the same price as a jy fender. I'd like to know if anyone has bought a fender from Napa, and what the quality of it was.

Aren't those 67-69 reproduction camaro body's made in taiwan? those look pretty good..., but on the other hand they are $12G.

Re: $50 fenders

i dont have any experience with them myself but i have been told that if you drill the holes bigger in the top to allow for more movement and take the time to put shims where they are needed then they can look good...not great, but good.

Those are the $50 NAPA fenders with a mark up. I seen in the catalog where GM fenders are upwards of $400.

Re: $50 fenders

Like anything else, you get what you pay for. Aftermarket parts come from many manufacturers and some are better than others. My thought is if you buy enough of them you may find one that looks and fits good enough to keep. It won't last as long as a GM part but it might get you by.

What are the fenders made out of? I just bought some from a guy for $20 ea. and they weigh practically nothing! They felt like aluminum; lol.
Just curious; I have a 1989 Camaro RS and wondering what they are made out of and if they really weigh not much. I havent removed mine yet; thats why.

wise choice IMO on a tight budget!
Just make sure the gaps on the donor car look good first! The j/y car could possibly have some of the same aftermarket junk.

Use a magnet to check, although you might want to put something between the magnet and your paint.

I have real exp. and as I already stated the fender I got for my car was a total CRAP fit!Lined up nice with the hood and the mounts to the nose but,the gap between the door and fender was just plain YUCK!!
From the top of the door behind the side mirror it looked great but midway down around the center body line it went to crap! Just under the center of the door there was a gap almost a half inch!

Re: $50 fenders

yea i wouldnt waste the money, jy's always have sales too. i picked up my fender and hood for $48 one weekend on sale. but also be careful with the jy stuff look at it close and hard cause it may already be a repop fender or a bad OEM pannel with a ton of bondo i have ran into both cases thats where saveing the recite to return the part comes in handy.

I have a high doubt for it's quality. I won't compromise anything for such a questionable price.

Re: $50 fenders

I have a cheapy off Ebay and the gap around the door has always been kinda funky.. But then again it could have just needed a little massaging while off the car or my car could have a little twist to it from the accident that required me to replace that fender. Or I just suck at bodywork.. But I did spend quite a while getting it the best I could.
And then I didn't latch my hood one time, had it pop up, and then put big dings in both fenders when I slammed the hood back down in a hurry. So all that work shot to poo..

will something that's CAPA certified be inexpensive? do you remember how much your fenders cost?

Re: $50 fenders

I have one of the cheapie fenders on my daughter's '84 T/A. I had to move the top holes over to the point the bolts were completly out of the original slots. The portion under the rear hood hinge bolt was so out of place I cut it off. The end result was a good alignment to the hood and nose but less than ideal at the front of the door, especially the top.

That said, couldn't find a rust free used one in S.E. Michigan. Shipping was as much as the fender from out of state. I'd buy one again for a daily driver.

Re: $50 fenders

I don't know about later model stuff but the earlier (1st gen) stuff all comes from Taiwan. The do not, never will, can't fit exact because when they built or bought the dies from GM they had to change them a little bit because of patents and whatnot (so i have been told). I have a garage full of 67 camaro body panels... hoods, fenders, quarters... they take some creative body work to get to line up. Will they, sure eventually but you have to be good. With the full bodies (Dynacorp) someone else assembles them from all the new parts so the fit work is already done. thats why they cost $14K but they take minimal skills to build the car.

In the end use the repos if OEM is not available. In a third gens case, go to the jy, you will find a good OE fender cheap. That is not possible on the older cars so usually the repos is all your left with unless you want to pay crazy money, for example...

1967 full repo quarter with trunk jamb and C pillar - $300
1967 full ORIGINAL GM mark quarter with same - $3000

Now it "should" fit better but who is to know after the car has been on the road 20-40 years....

Just go in to Napa and ask for a pair of fenders for your car. That's how I found out about them.

well to get classic industries fenders for 80 each i have to pay truck freight to ship. go to napa spend 50 each fender no shipping. sounds good enough for a race car to me.

Can you post a link to the $50 fenders or is this a parts counter price???

They don't list anything online but $300 mud guards, and Im not kidding.
$300 quarter fender mud guards. Not rear quaters.

Could you possibly lead us to a capa certified part/ website? I really want to get some new fenders.

Re: $50 fenders

capa certification is just a thing better aftermarket companies go through to get their parts, well certified, better metal, better fit, pretty much close to original...i have no complaints....many companies make them and then get certified, to see if it is a capa part...the box should say so and on the inside of the fender there should be a bright yellow 2 part sticker that says capa certified part on it...best bet is to go to your local body shop and ask them to hunt down a capa fender for you...they get it at list price also...which is a lot cheaper them you buying it from an aftermarket company...usually 30% off...

good luck...alex.

If your at NAPA again check on rear fenders prices. Usually just a skin but thats fine. The only NAPA around here is far away.

Re: $50 fenders

Was pretty cheap around 50. Forgot which site I bought it from. Only problem i had was a small gap on the drivers door, which im assuming is my error because its the first time i replaced a 1/4 panel.

Re: $50 fenders

yes, i was at a napa store, not a service garage. It wasn't in a computer, it was in a book, and they called to verify the price for me. Maybe
I'll see if they can print me out a quote or something like that.

Yeah, it's not $50, but when you consider the free shipping...

Re: $50 fenders

They don't sell quarter panels. When I checked, maybe a week ago, fenders seem to be $83 now.

Re: $50 fenders

There are only a couple of places actually making reproduction panels for these cars, and the rest are just buying from these places.

There may be a little bit of a better fit and quality from higher end places like Classic or Goodmark, but anyone who thinks they're going to buy a reproduction panel or an aftermarket panel and not have to do any body work on them is naive at best.

Re: $50 fenders

i work at a chevy delier and i asked my parts guy to see if he could find any fenders for my 1992 rs. he did a locator to see if any deliers had a fenders, non in the united states... so aftermarket is the way to go.
