As you can see, some major rust. I have no idea what to do, or what shop to take it to. And I could use some help...

Re: Just a little rust....

i personally would go over the rest of the car first, before doing anything.

Pull the carpet, get it on a lift and check out the underside, check the bottoms of the doors.

if everything else checks out and is fine or workable, then look into repairing this.

I would assume the windsheild would have to be removed, and the pillar rebuilt. A competent autobody should be able to rebuild it, id dont know how hard it would be to cut that while part from a doner and have it patched in?

it almost looks like somebody cut the metal out?

Re: Just a little rust....

If it's just the outer part and it hasn't worked it's way into the inner portions of the pillar then a repair would be fairly simple. I'd be interested to know what the rest of the car looks like, rust wise.

Holy smokes!! I have never seen that much rust on the a-pillar before!
I could probably cut you an a-pillar out, if need be...

Re: Just a little rust....

When I looked at it, it was dark, and the guy had it covered with red duct tape so it blended in.

...., so, how much do you estimate it would cost to have it repaired?

Unless you know someone in the autobody business that will take it on as a project, I would assume that it could easily run several thousand dollars. More than you probably bought the car for I'm assuming. It's a major structural component of the vehicle. I'll bet there are alot of guys on this site that would (and probably could) strap that job on. But if it were me I would sell, sell, sell...You'll take a hit, but in the end it will be less of a loss than if you pay to have it fixed. How much did you pay.?..don't be shy.

Yeah, looks like someone had a plan. They were probably going to just putty it up with bondo and paint. The real way to do that job would be to cut that post out.

Re: Just a little rust....

I don't think that would be much of a job really. Pop the glass out and find a pillar to rob parts off of. If the inner structure isn't rusted thru you could clean it up and just replace the outer piece. Paint would be the killer. If you just spray the repaired part and don't worry about the roof it wouldn't be much. It's the rest of the car you need to worry about. If the rest is as bad as this, repair it with duct tape like the last guy and sell it... in the dark.

no offence, but that seems waaaaay high. They are not rebuilding the whole car here. So long as the damage is just what we are seeing and does not extend into the car or into the firewall/fender area i dont see it costing that much.

*edit*
well, the more i think about it, you would need to pull the windsheild, the weather stripping around the door, probably the t-top seal as well. It could be pricey, and then paint ect. Maybe bring it to a shop and see what they tell you? Or just go the duct tape route a little longer.....

Re: Just a little rust....

Looks like you have a base model Camaro. I would really think hard about sinking any real money into getting that fixed.

Re: Just a little rust....

Ouch yeah that's scary...but it looks like the inside of the pillar is clean. The only way is, as said previously, to remove the windshield, drill the spot welds, pull out the rusted section and replace it with a part from from a donor car. If you can weld, have some tools or an access to tools (primer, grinder, spot weld cutter) and have a place to store the car for some time, it should be allright. I would add bracing while repairing this.
Also, and very important, check for other rust holes. I would remove the fender, pull the carpet to see the floors and take a look the water drain under the cowl panel.

Do you have a picture of how it looked like before you removed the tape ? I might be about to buy a car that has paint bubbling at the bottom of both A-pillars, it looks solid on the one I saw.

Re: Just a little rust....

Wow......just strip the thing for parts. There is really no point fixing a 3rd gen that rusty (especially one that bad). Hell look in the 2nd pic, see the spray foam?! I bet if you take off that a pillar trim it's rusted. Remember, the rust free cars are still out there.

Re: Just a little rust....

I couldn't believe it when I noticed a little patch starting to bubble up on that pillar on my car, it's gotta be the easiest place on the car to keep dry, painted, and salt-free

Luckily it was also easy to sand down

Holy cow! That rust is so little that it almost shrink the metal to death. If this rust looks terrible, I strongly believe that there are still somewhere lurking
