Re: My ground up (Start to finish) thread

I just wanted to let you know, as all the others have said, you are doing an Awesome job on this. Do you work in a Body shop, or Machine shop with some of the skills you've shown in fabricating pieces?

Re: My ground up (Start to finish) thread

Heres what i put off till about everything else was done.
this was probably the worse of the car. basically from the looks of it water, sand, road grim etc. might have got into some of the wheel well seems and adventively rotted lucky it only went as far a the lip. so i had to cut it all out and make my own backing and a peace to reconnect the lip. it took some time since i don't have any body tools or srinkers or stretchers just the old hammer and vice. heres some pics

I have to do the same thing in the same exact spot on my car, must be a common rust spot. But I have more rust under there then you. You gave me a good idea how to approach mine. Thank you!

Re: My ground up (Start to finish) thread

Iv been using these old rims from some 70s truck anytime iv needed or wated to keep the car pre-loaded and be able to work under it. But i needed to gain a some more room so i used some 4x4 and 2x4s to get the car up higher so i can have enough room to coat the underside of the car. i ran out of screws tonight i need to put 2 more 2x4 side peaces on each. the 2x4s have a lip to keep the rims kinda boxed in and for safety even though they will probably never side. because the cars going up higher its going to be hard to try and squeeze these rims up on the front with the car unloaded so im going to probably have to make a brace that will hold the a-arms up and keep the front preloaded while i jack up on the brace... heres some pics...

Re: My ground up (Start to finish) thread

Car looks like its coming out great..very professional rebuild.....for my 2 cents i'd say put the roll cage in....i have a 6 point in my 87......it's abolt in cage.....i also welded extra flat plats on to the top of my subframe connectors to allow the bolts from the rollcage to tie into that as well.......really stiffined up the car.. handels better and rides better too......allot less chasis flexing......keep up the picts!

Re: My ground up (Start to finish) thread

So been playing around with sway bars obviously i cant test or get a feel for how i want the car to roll - understeer or oversteer but i at least have an idea instead of tossing on a 36mm / 25mm combo i think im going with a 34mm in the front and either a 23mm or 24mm in the rear to start out with. i think im scraping the jegsters and going to build my own tubular set of sub frames that would be far superior then anything offered on the market but we'll see. and if i do go that route id have to invests in a pipe notcher i kicked around the idea of fabbing up a set of lcas and a upper panhard bar since i know the exhauste is going to want to rest and bang against the stock one.

Does anyone even make a replacement for the upper portion of the panhard rod? I was just thinking about your post and was trying to remember if I have ever seen one for sale anywhere. Sure would be nice to replace that stamped piece with either a boxed or tubular unit.

There are company's that make them. the upper bar ties in the left and right rear sub frame. i do need to clear my exhauste system besides adding some strength.

Ah, yes I did see that, I guess it didn't click the first time through. Might not be too hard to make, but you would need to be able to make those bends and that would be pretty challenging. If you decide to give it a shot, I would love to see your photos. While I am a bit adventurous with my projects, that is a bit out of my skill level, I'll just roll with the kit.

Re: My ground up (Start to finish) thread

Looks really good, is that a factory painted swaybar or an aftermarket? The silver paint on the steering linkages looks good, did it come painted that color or was that a personal touch? The pic is a little blurry who makes those tie rod sleaves? They look really beefy, almost overkill.. I like it With all those poly bushings and the brand new tierod ends etc. it should handle like its on rails

Re: My ground up (Start to finish) thread

I hand scraped and whipped most of the old undercoating and over spray and fixed a lot of small areas. i power washed and cleaned the entire underside. i pulled the rear end back out. It took forever to get to this point if i had to do it over id just build my own chassis and mount the body. Working on the top and bottom floor boards was more work then i anticipated and has eaten up about a year and a half of car down time but it needed to be done. the underside is in primmer i should have a new rubberized coating on the bottom by this weekend along with the rear end and more goodies back in. I would love to have a nice smooth painted underside but the amount of time require to take all that rubber coating off that one of the previous owners put on would be over to whelming and to time consuming to the leave that id want to take it too. this car is going to be driven and raced so the re-coating it doesn't make me feel so upset.

Nice progress. I'll have to fab up an upper panhard bar too. I'm anxious to see what you come up with.
