Re: DOOR HINGES

You can replace the body side portion of the hinge, and rebuild the hinge bushing better than new. Purchase the kit from Top-Down. You will be happy you did.

Re: DOOR HINGES

Yep, TDS. Repaired a few doors with them myself. Hinges are welded in and stressed member the chassis. Lower can be fixed/improved with auto parts store pieces, but the upper requires TDS kit.

couldn't these parts be used to fix the whole thing (upper and lower) too? the TDS kit seems way too pricey.... nothing against that company I told quite a few people about their site who've needed the headlight repair kit because of how well it worked for me.

Re: DOOR HINGES

Doing a search on Advance Auto Parts site you linked to. It appears they incorrectly list the lower hinge pins & bushings as repairing the upper hinges. Take a look at the picture that pops up then go out to your car and you'll see they repair only the lower hinges. I've attached their picture:
"Vehicle: 1990 CHEVROLET CAMARO IROC-Z
Engine: V8 5.0 Liter FI

Door Hinge Pin & Bushing Kit: Front Upper"

Sorry to hear you think $74 is too much for a kit to repair your upper & lower hinge pins & bushings with superior parts.

No I think 205.00 is too much to fix my sagging doors to quote the price on your deluxe kit btw the $74 price is per door so it is kinda pricey @ $148 for some sagging doors I'm just looking for an alternative and trying to get some feedback from other TGO members that may have gone a different route and gotten positive (or negative) results. I'm sure there are individuals out there that have used diiferent products and I'd like to know what worked and what didn't.

Re: DOOR HINGES

I went a differnt route. I machined some bushings and some new pins for the hinge. Worked out great. But I had a machine shop at my disposal and needed a project for class. The next set of doors I repair, I'm going to purcase a kit. When I did mine, I was in the process of putting new doors on, so it was easier to get the correct fit. I'm assuming on the car would be harder.

Re: DOOR HINGES

you should have someone pull up on the end of the door and look at the hinge and see if you can tell where it is wiggling

that lower hinge pin (the cheap one) did a great job for my situation, but every car is different

Re: DOOR HINGES

I replaced the lower pins on mine on both sides with the cheap kit from Autozone and that fixed the passenger door. The driver's door was still sagging though. Since I had a junk door with good upper pins/bushings, I cut them out of the hinge and put them into the hinge on the car. That was a major PITA, help it out a lot. The driver's door still sags a tiny bit, but not enough to rub anything. I would've loved to have gotten the TDS kit(and will once these wear out), but I just couldn't afford it at the time.

Re: DOOR HINGES

thanks for the info i checked out the doors today the driver's side looks like it maybe just the bottom that needs replacing, the passenger side seems tight so maybe the whole doors out of whack i'll pull it apart in a few months when it warms up

Re: DOOR HINGES

these doors are very heavy. The only acceptable fit ,is to [in most cases] replace the uper hinge. The TDS hinge kit is expensive , but is a fine machined piece. It does a great job. On our Bonneville cxar we had a terriable fit on the driver's door. There hinge kit solved it the first time. I had removed the door 10 times or more trying to fix it. Guess what? It was cheaper to just get the right part in the first place.

If you've examined the hinges closely while someone lifts and releases the bottom of the door and it is OK as you state, yet is rubbing on the bottom whan you close & open it. Then the door hinges have bent from the weight of that long heavy door. You can take it to a shop and pay them to align the door. Or you can buy a tool and do it yourself. I sell a cool tool called the EZ-Store door alignment tool, (I wish I knew of it before I invested in the MAC tools one I originally bought).
