Need some help with my rims

I just bought a 1982 z28 and one of the previous owners tryed to paint the rims black. The paint is fading on some of them and it looks stupid so i need to know what the best way to get the paint off would be. Like sandblasting them or having them dipped? What are your ideas

Just buy new rims, like pull them off a z28 in the junk yard for cheap. Chances are the previous owner ruined them.

Well it seems like it was some cheap paint, because where the paint is coming off it seems to be coming off pretty well. I don't really have the money to get new ones right now. The rims don't look damaged.

buy a can of low oder aircraft stripper fom pep boys, walmart,or autozone. You need some gloves cause it stings on your skin. buy a few real cheap paint brushes.($1.00each)paint a nice thick coat on let it bubble and it will come off with a rag you will need to reapply to a couple spots and possibly use a plastic scrapper but this stuff works great. This is of coarse with the wheels off the car.Buy some decent wheel paint and masking tape and take your time they will come out great.

Re: Need some help with my rims

IT works great but will take some elbow grease in spots. But theres nothing like restoring a car or part and taking great pride in how nice something can come out with a little time and work.I have yet to post any of my cars before and after pics mostly because my lack of computer skills but i would guess i have about 18hrs per wheel stripping, sanding, and polishing each stock wheel.

Aircraft Remover is FANTASTIC stuff & WAY, WAY, WAY better than a simple thinner. It will remove the bad paint, old clear coat from the factory....WHATEVER is on there.

Then you are free to repaint/polish to your hearts desire.

There is no better solution to this, than Aircraft Remover (brand name, not just a "type" of product)

Re: Need some help with my rims

Same stuff I used on my RS wheels. It removed all the clear coat and almost all the red paint. I cleaned them up really good afterward and repainted them black.

Re: Need some help with my rims

I also have a question, once you remove the clear coat, Shouldn't you shoot another coat of clear coat on them?

Coated wheels are easier to keep clean especially if they have a texture to them. Smooth ones can be polished but it seems like I always have something more fun to do than polish the rims.

Be careful with other strippers. Not all are safe for aluminum.
