t top flew off!!!!
t top flew off!!!!
was tinkering with the car today and had already took it for a few quick test drives and about the third time i was goin down the road about 40 or so and WHOOSH!!!!!the driver side just goes flyin and i see it in my side mirror floatin thru the air and smashin to pieces behind me.........so ,that sucks.....any way, i get back home and im lookin where it locks in at on the car and it had been wore down and someone tried to fix it by putting some aluminum bands in there,,,,,checked the pass side and its loose when locked down.....is there a good way to fix this??? and what a good estimate for a junkyard one?

I paid $50 for a pair of tops outa a local yard, they look really good. As for the mounting pins and recievers. Just go to a yard and pull 4 good ones that aren't all mangled like yours are.
Almost forgot. ALWAYS lock your tops with the keys.

I had the same thing happen one day. Some girl in a infinite g35 pulled up to me at a light...She started creeping further and further ahead of me trying to get as much of a jump as possible. Needless to say..when the light hit green my pedal hit the floor..after about a 20 foot burnout my tires finally hooked up and I flew by her like she was standing still. then about 8 seconds later my driver side t-top came off. It hit me in the head before it fell off to the side. I turned around to pick it up...but it was too late.[it got ran over

I ended up ordering a used one from hawks. It's kinda beat up looking but its better than nothing.

First thing I did when I started driving my Camaro was go to the yard and get a spair set just incase. Also my key doesnt fit the locks so I am uber paranoid someone might steal them so I have my alarm set over sensative, kinda gets annoying.

Re: t top flew off!!!!
It sounds like this always happens to people when their putting the pedal down or going at a good speed. Obviously not having them locked down or not sitting can be a problem but I'm guessing flex in the body is another factor. Would sub frame connectors help this or does it happen to guys with those installed anyways?...??... I don't have t tops for this reason so I was just curious...

Man sorry to hear that. What a pain. The 79-93 Mustang sunroofs do it too.The two retainers in the front rot in half.
The bone yard's probably your best bet for finding a new piece of glass. If they're available through GM they'd probably want a ton of money for it.

I ride motorcycles. Thank god that didnt come off and hit a motorcyclist--you could have killed them!
I think the general rule of thumb here is take your T-Tops off and keep them off!! LOL! Hey, its almost summer isnt it?

Does yours have pins or the hooks they used two different styles over the years. The Pins on the later years I don't see how they would come out as they extend into the receiver a good inch. The receiver is plastic but if you take it out there is also a metal tab that it would be traped in if the plastic broke.
A lock smith should be able to rekey the junk yard one to match your door keys, or if you still have it move your key cylinder over to the replacement.
Luckly My car the door key still works on all the locks in the car.

I have a set of Acrylic t-tops.. If those came out, I'd be crying... They're the pin style though..

I believe T-Tops in 1982-1984 didnt come with locks (standard)--that was a small upgrade. The logic wasnt the tops flying off but theft and break ins. By 1985 locks became standard if you ordered T-Tops.
