I don't do ghetto stuff to my car, I'm a perfectionist. However, I use to work with this guy who had a dodge ram. He liked the look of carbs with open air elements and so he crafted one himself. He connected PVC pipe from home depot to his throttle body and put a cone filter after the 90 degree bend. It looked so hilarious I couldn't help but laugh hysterically. He didn't even paint the PVC. He kept it white with the manufacturer stamps still on it. It had globs of RTF sealant all over it too.

I did finally figure out what he was talking about. He was referring to the Camaro with the logo on the side that read "IRC-Z". I didn't know what he was referring to at first since he misspelled the misspelled word. Anyone here see the movie Idiocracy? I think that's where this thread belongs.

I found an '85 International Flatbed in Iraq that was my driver to pick up stuff when I needed to. When I went to check the oil, I noticed the engine sitting alot lower than it should have been...the mounts were gone and the engine was welded to the frame by the manifolds

I feel embarrased but I must admit a ghetto fix that didnt really fix the problem. I put clear weather resistant silicone caulking in-between the weatherstrip and the body of my T-Tops. Didnt work, still leaks.

I did the same thing except for I put the sealant between the pieces of strip on the body and the tops in the corners where the latch pins are. No luck there, either. I guess my rubbers on the body are just too far shot.

Yeah, same boat exactly. Mine's getting a repaint before new weatherstripping, which is ALL shot minus the pieces on the tops themselves. Problem with my tops is that they are from a 91, so they aren't quite the right ones for my weatherstrip. Had to replace them after the old ones got broken...

Wow. That sucks. Hit the junkyard bro. I got an extra center T-Top for only $5 bucks. The junkyard dude wanted to charge me $45 but I told him that the weather strip was ripped on the piece so it really had no good use. It made him look like a dork so he sold it to me for $5. As I left, he sat on his rear end and started to lick his woulds caused by embarrament.

my mom was the previous owner the camaro, till she passed it on to me, and the AC vents wouldnt stay where you want them, so my mom put folded pieces of paper, and such to keep them from moving, she even put one of those suction cup thingys under one

Luckily, I found a decent set in the Classic Industries catalog for around $250. But that's going to wait for the quarter panel first... (read back a couple of pages to find out that story). I'm going to go and get the repair panel either this or next week now that I have batteries for my saw (just waiting on the blades I ordered). Last edited by Maverick H1L; Aug 9, 2010 at 10:22 PM.

well since people are adding theirs i guess i could add mine. where to start? lets see its a 91 rs camaro. has a 87 iroc z 5.7 in it. the wiring harness is blocking the way to put the ac vents back into my car. the ac was completely removed. the dash was switched to the 87 iroc dash and is held on by 2 bolts and some wire tires. he tried to put a manual trans into the car and cut a huge hole into the floor board that now i have to fix. i have to re run the speaker wires since he has only the back speakers and they wires are kinda out there. o lets not forget that i have 1 of my fans hooked to a flip switch mounted under then dash. the wires that are supposed to be concealed under the dash on the driver side well lets just say they are all hanging down with the piece thats supposed to hold them up missing. o and back to the wiring harness lets see under the hood they are all held away from my headers with zip ties and god knows what else i have to do to this car. i am in the process now of removing my dash and trying to get everything back the way it goes....

?Let me correct you. You have a L98 TPI from a 87 IROC. There you go. Now it makes sense.

my Camaro was a hack job under the hood with wiring going every direction possible, the coolant overflow was pretty much in half, and the fluid reservoir for the clutch was missing the cap and had green tape to cover it.

He actually made since in his post since he said its a 91 RS with a 87 Iroc-z 5.7. But regardless going

Re: What is the most ghetto thing you've found done to your car?
First of all you mean "sense instead of since." And NO. A 87 IROC-Z can have a 5.7 carb setup, or 5.7 TPI, AKA L98. So with that said, it does not mean that because he stated 5.7, he meant an engine. Now if said "an engine from a 87 IROC," then his statement would of made complete sense. My bro n law has a 1987 Z-28 IROC-Z 5.7 350 TPI which is thee car and its specs, not the engine. Now if I were to refer about a engine, I would say LB9, L98, LQ9, LC1, LG4, LU5, L69, G92, WS6, B2L, and so on and so on. Now does my reply make sense (not since)?
but i guess if he said "has a 87 Iroc-z L98" then that would be fine, even though its the exact same statement
no need to argue just because he didnt say "L98" or "350", 5.7 means the same thing in thirdgen terms

Your right. Just got out of work so I was a bit cranky. No argument.
. Personally, when someone installs a TPI power plant into a RS,that to me is ghetto IMO.

the statement "has a 87 Iroc-z 5.7" makes perfect sense, if it didnt have the 5.7 then it would make no sense at all

Everyone has there own opions right? Well my IROC is supposed to have the LB9 engine but I got the IROC as a wedding gift, I then realized it had a L98. The L98 threw a rod and I rebuilt another L98. Now everything is 350 converted instead of the 305 OEM parts.

I agree as long as there is a power increase or you atleast have a good excuse to do the swap then it isnt ghetto.
Re: What is the most ghetto thing you've found done to your car?
the muffler was going out so the exhaust was hacked off behind the catalytic converter.
sad thing about it? im the idiot who did it. day before senior year started. the most embarrassing part about it? its still like that, and i hacked it off in 2002.
never did get that exhaust i figured it would force me to have to spend money on (id wanted a catback badly but had to repair too many other bogus things on the car just to make it run so i figured if i hacked it off it wouldnt take long til i got a fix it ticket, then i wouldnt/couldnt feel bad about spending money on a catback...but ive never been stopped for it and really never had the money for it.
my how i lust for a GMMG.
so, so embarrassing having the exhaust hacked off like that for 9 years. *facepalm*

Re: What is the most ghetto thing you've found done to your car?
Here's one for ya. I just got in from working under my hood. I had a Spider Web under there and also in the interior. The stock Gauges didn't work, so the PO Got a set of Sunpro gauges and mounted them to the bottom of the dash. He ran all the cables, tubes, leads, etc through a hole in the firewall and ran them along the dash to where they met the gauges in the center. Here's the funny part. Each of the 3 gauges had a light. The PO wired all three Red wires together and connected them to the stereo power wire. the ground wires were each run individually through the firewall to the engine bay and back across to the passenger side where they were routed along the fender to the negative pole on the battery. There, they were attached to the terminal with the bolts that hold the Ground strap to the Terminal. The Wires themselves were NOT secured in any way. they were just flopping around. Why didn't he just spice them together and attach them to a steering column bolt or something? Why did they have to go all the way to the battery? The Voltmeter was no different. The wire that's supposed to measure voltage was routed in a similar way to the ground wires, except, he cut the alternator wire right in the middle and spliced it in. in all cases, he used electrical tape. I spent 2 hours tracing and rerouting. The pic is of the EXTRA wires that i removed. Yes, I AM SURE that those wires were not needed. There is still more that needs to be done, but i can only do so much at one time before i get disgusted.

I haven't taken the time to read through everything, but im pretty sure this has never been done. A couple years ago when my neighbor down the street got his black Iroc we were looking at the terrible mess it was and he showed me the inside where an ac power inverter was plugged into the ciggarette lighter, plugged into that was an orange extension cord which ran through the fire wall, and under the hood to the "radiator fan" which was actually an ordinary lasko box fan like you've got in your bedroom. Needless to say the car had some overheating issues.

This one sounds like its almost too good to be true. How was the box fan mounted? I dont think that your statement is true. I mean, it would be cheaper to hit the junk yard and buy a used radiator fan, rather than buy power inverter and a heavy duty extention cord, and a box fan. Besides, even if it was feasible, why run the orange wire through the cabin when you can easily splice the wires from the inverter to a "ignition hot" wire in the engine bay? Im not saying that you are not being honost, Im just saying that your claim doesnt sound true, at all.

Re: What is the most ghetto thing you've found done to your car?
I just bought a 1992 Firebird for a parts car to fix my 1991. I didn't notice it when I bought it because I wasn't too worried about whether it ran or not because I just needed body parts. I did notice that the keys the guy gave me didn't have the chip in it. It was just a regular gm key. I didn't think much of it at the time, just figured the ignition was changed out. However I was under the dash looking at the fuses and noticed that the there was an ignition switch rigged into the wires under the dash. It has the gm key that has the chip in it. I could not believe it. GHETTO!

However, talking about ghetto-rigged VATS... My car didn't originally have it, and I needed a cheap way to create the VATS signal, so I put a used VATS module in and ran wires down under the console where I have a removable resistor "key" I made from parts I got at RadioShack. I don't mind carrying both keys, although the ring can get heavy with all of those keys.

I picked up my 1986 Trans Am and the catalytic converter had one bolt in it and the other side was filled with silicine to "stop the leak" lol, also the momo had used a 2x4 with nails in it to "lean the ice off the windshield" lol

Re: What is the most ghetto thing you've found done to your car?
The temp sensor for the fan must have burnt out, so the PO wired the fan to a toggle switch on the dash, which was wired directly to the battery. Those are the wires running across the radiator shroud. And yes, that is a knife switch across the battery. Maybe it was to kill all power in case you forgot to shut off the fan switch. Or perhaps it was a security device. Hopefully you remembered to turn the fan on before the motor fried.
