changing the y pipes

On both of my camaros I would like to upgrade the y pipes. I guess they are too puny and would like to upgrade. Is something I can do, or do I need a shop to do this?

MAC (sorry about the TLA, but I don't know the full name) used to make an OE-type replacement, IIRC, but they were/are difficult to come by. Aside from a shop manufacturing something, you're out of luck. You might consider buying headers and their accompanying Y. Board favs are the Hooker 2055's and Dyno Don's creation.

I could have it fabricated by a muffler shop I know about. They are third gen buffs. BTW I was just kidding about the TLA's. I just have a lot to learn about these cars. Some people are content with being ignorant about what they drive. I have more of a desire to know.

Re: changing the y pipes

I think the factory pipes have an inner pipe to reduce noise, and they have some very sharp bends for the size pipe. I'd be surprised if local shops could make one for reasonable money. Big improvement with short headers and the better flowing Y-pipe that comes with them. Install is not fun though.

funny you should mention the 2055's.
i have a friend that has a cat back that he tied into his stock system. now he wants to put his headers on and a new hiflo cat. can he just bolt up to the existing catback system or will he have to do a lot of cutting and refitting, if you know?

The headers I used bolted up perfect to a Dynomax cat back system with a new converter. Should be no problem. Getting those new headers in there is not fun though.
