I just realized that my rim key is missing for my 1992 RS. It is the 305 TBI Heritage model with the skunk stripes and 16 inch rims. The guys at Big-O tire said they can remove the locks and replace them with regular lug nuts, but I wanted to see if I might be able to replace the key. Any ideas would help

i had this happen one time, i used a socket that was a little bigger than the lug nut and put some epoxy putty in it, put that on the lug that you need to remove and let it set, it worked to loosen up the lugs and then i just changed them for some other type of locking lug nuts

 

Had the same issue on my 92 z28. From my understanding, there were several different variations of the keys, so finding one to match yours might be a long shot. I went to Sears and got a deep well 18mm (it might have been a 20mm, I cant recall now) 12 point socket. Took and hammer and tapped it over the locks and they came right off. I just replaced my locks with standard lug nuts.

 

He's not asking how to get it off without the correct key people. He wants to get a NEW, CORRECT key, for the lug nuts he has.

Check with GM & see if they have any records, that keep track of WHICH lug nut & key, went on WHICH VIN #. Maybe they can get a new key, but I doubt it.

Probably hafta use the socket trick (do it yourself, don't pay Big-O to do something you can do just as easily) and key new keyed lug nuts.

 

Right, understood. I went to the largest Chevy dealer here in Memphis and they couldn't help. Said the car was just too long out of production. If you can get yours off, you might find someone on ebay selling a stock set with the correct key.

 

Yeah, I called Chevy also and they told me some junk about finding a serial number tag that should be with the original paperwork from 1992 and that I'd have to contact whatever company they subcontracted stock wheel locks to, etc. etc. I think I will have to just replace the locks with new ones or lug nuts. But really, I havent had anyone trying to steal the stupid rims at all. Is it really necessary to have the wheel locks?

 

that was my logic... now days, no one wants 17 or 18 year old scratched stock rims.... so I just went back to stock lug nuts.

 

I'd rather keep my custom rims, than switch to steel wheels, or even the stock crosslaces which are just as likely to get stolen.

I figure the day I took the lock nuts off, would be the day someone tried to steal them. It's a lot more of an inconvenience to have your wheels stolen, than it is to use a lock nut!

 

well i had a this problem but they were some cheap walmart set when i bought my bird, they guy had no idea were the socket was, so i used a extractor (i think thats what they are i can find a picture of them, greatest tolls ever made tho) and hammered it on and twisted it off, it worked, but man those nuts are no use to anybody
