Ground Effects Repair

I have a pair of front fender ground effects for my 1991 Firebird. My only problem is they are in about 10 pieces. What would be the best way of putting them back together? What material and procedures?

Re: Ground Effects Repair

if they are THAT damaged, its going to be cheaper to just buy a new one.

Re: Ground Effects Repair

Re: Ground Effects Repair

Well if you know anything about 1991-1992 firebird ground effects, they are extremely rare to find. I have found a few online but they sell so fast, for upwards of $200, it would actually be cheaper to repair them.

Does anyone have any advice on what PRODUCTS and PROCEDURES to use to fix this?

X2 I also would love to be able to repair mine. I got the car thinking they would be easy and cheap to replace, not knowing how rare they are. Not too worried about it, they don't make the car look super trashy or anything, but it'd be nice to fix em up.

Re: Ground Effects Repair

If any body needs them. I have a set of the 91/92 gfx that I took off a parts car. The front pieces are gone and I do not have the bumpers, just the parts that go on the door.
The plastic parts were ok but the brackets were typical MN rusty. They are free!

I have used evercoats maxim (black in a caulk tube)and the sem (gray, available here at least, in smaller tubes) for flex repairs and they work well.
You maybe amazed what you can reconstruct with them but they are expensive.
Sometimes if you need a lot of this stuff a better part is actually cheaper. HTH.

Y'all need to search FYRCHKN's postings. He's in our local club and built his own front 91-92 bird ground effects.

Re: Ground Effects Repair

If your gfx is broken in 10 pieces not only would it be difficult to repair, it may not look correct/straight when finished. I would look for replacement. The guy making his own gfx has a recent thread on here about them. If not then other choice would be reproduction piece from classic industries or other.

My experience with gfx/bumper repair hasn't turned out so great. I bought some evercoat maxim two part plastic epoxy to repair a large tear in rear bumper. I also bought some repair panels to place on backside of bumper for strength. Cost me about $75 for supplies. I enlarged crack with dremel to allow for more filler room and placed repair panel on backside. I then filled crack with epoxy and sanded it down. After a few days I noticed a lump in repair area. Repair panel is not stiff and flexes some. Looks like panel is pushing through backside to make a visible lump. Maybe I dremeled to wide of an area out of bumper. Here is a link to their website with some good videos.

I don't know if a polyurethane welding rod would work better for larger structural cracks/tears. The maxim epoxy works great for chips. Just dremel out, fill, sand and paint.
