Does anyone here use their thirdgen as a daily driver?
Re: Does anyone here use their thirdgen as a daily driver?
Well of course that's an opinion, but I agree with you to an extent. I'd rather build a late C3 (1980-1982) 'Vette than have a new Camaro SS. Too bulky of a car IMO. I love 'em. With that sort of cash, I'd pick up a decent '80-'82 for probably around 8-10K, sink 20-25K into it, and have 5K or so left over for gas.

Now if only I were loaded. I'd have myself a matching black C3, and black C6 Z06, and daily drive both in nice weather, of course.

I use mine as a daily driver. Don't see the point in having it sit around. The way I look at it, I have no car payment, full coverage insurance w/ Progressive runs me $380/yr. The only downside is the premium gas prices. Even with the high gas prices, its still cheaper for me to drive my Camaro in the long run.

Re: Does anyone here use their thirdgen as a daily driver?
I wouldnt want a newer camaro ss. The new challengers are nice but most new cars are just pains in the *** to work on. id rather have my old slow car then a fast new one. I can take that 40k for a new camaro and put it into my older one and be just as reliable, just as fast, look just as good
You bring up a great point- My normal DD is my Colorado, which grenaded the tranny in late January. I've been driving my wifes 'summer' (read: Fuel economy) car- our 99 Grand Am since late January. I've put new tires, a serp belt and tensioner, fluids and filters into the car since then and about 20k miles. It's a $1500 car if it's got 100k or 200k, so I'm putting miles on it. It's cost less than 2 months of truck payments on my Colorado, and gets 10 mpg more on the highway. Not that 20's and a 3" lift help my situation.
It's so much more cost effective to drive an older vehicle, so long as it has been and continues to be maintained properly, and still looks good inside and out.
On the other hand, my Z gets drove 1-2k/year and is a Fri/Sat night/not hauling samples to and from the office car (I sell food- you don't want pancake and waffle syrup or a case of onion Kaisers in your back seat for a couple hours...trust me!). I'd drive it everyday if I could, but it's not practical for what I do and need for a DD- a 2 door Grand Am is PITA enough to get a car seat and samples in and out of. God forbid I ever go back to a desk job, but should that day ever come, I'll be back to driving the Z FT, and if the Collie's paid off she'll be winter/bad weather.

i agree with Tonkatoy
one liter is about 1.4 euros over here, that's close to 2$. yes that's per liter, so you would end up with 3.89l x 1.97$ = 7.66$ per gal :P

I DD my Camaro, I drive it all the time, to high school, to my girlfriends, or just to drive. My V6 loves 93 octane gas, and mileage isn't bad.

iirc the earlier V6 ecms (2.8) didn't even have knock detection, so higher octane won't give you anything imho.. what kind of mpg do you get with that RS anyways?

I've never liked a Corvette in my life. I think they are all ugly and I'd never buy any year.

IMO, I'd take the Camaro over a Slopar any day. But, different strokes for different folks.

I have the factory 350.. I've got an 18-21 mile drive to work depending on which route I take. I'm averaging around 18-22mpg. Its all 45-50mph and a few miles on the interstate. I'm easy on the take-offs and don't race to red lights. Coast when I can.
I'm somewhere near $200-$240 /month on gas depending on the price.

But hey, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, which I really have no choice but to respect. Third gens aren't the best looking cars around either, but I still love mine. I just see that same attitude all the time. Tons of people bash more expensive cars since they can't afford one. Not saying that's you, but it's generally what I see.
I used to pick on Lamborghini for their history of building tractors first, but they're awesome cars.
Re: Does anyone here use their thirdgen as a daily driver?
Notice I did not say i'd take the challenger because it was faster. it just looks better. but I also came through and said I dont want any new car. But if I had to make a choice it'd be the challenger by 100 miles. I dont care how fast it is. Its a Dodge im sure it could be modified to handle a chevy no problem. Just like the old "slopars"
I know you don't want a new car, but it's kind of ridiculous that your post was picked at for implying you like the Challenger just a little bit.

I dd my 91 RS about 20-25 miles daily. I trust the chevy motors. Take care of them and they should take of you.

Shhhhhh.... Not allowed to like anything but an F body on here. I'm not really sure why, but even on car-specific forums, I expect a general love of all cars. Such as Travis' new 350Z, my Mustang, and the few guys on here who also have Corvettes, just to name a few. Just never had the one brand fanboy attitude, there are too many different manufacturers that make a lot of really good cars.

As an add on we are at $2.30 roughly per LITRE so I think it is 4.5L to a US Gallon so $10.35 per Gallon. I still drive my 89 Vert daily. My dad has a 73 stang vert as a DD and his toy is a Genuine 67 GT350 Shelby with the Paxton Super charger still attached :-) if you have then drive them :-)

Re: Does anyone here use their thirdgen as a daily driver?
Maybe they just want a newer car. Can't really blame 'em.
I mean, who wouldn't want a 2010+ Camaro SS (Even though I don't really love them, I'd pick one up if I could afford it) a newer Challenger, a new 5.0 Mustang, or even any new import of any sort, whatever they're into.
Newest things I'll have for a while are the '01 Slowstang GT, and if I decide to get back into bikes, a 2004-2006 Yamaha R1. But I'd really love to have a 2011+ 5.0 Mustang or a newer Challenger. Really nice cars IMO. Then there's my IROC which turns 25 this July. Getting old, but still only 99K on account of being trapped in the garage!

I'm right there with you--it'd be a new Challenger or a 5.0, most likely a 5.0. The Challenger is beautiful, but the Interior is meh and it's the slowest of the offerings from the big 3, unfortunately. The 5.0 is an absolute homerun interior-wise, and looks good on the outside too, and has unreal performance. The new Camaro has the usual horrible GM interior and it just looks like a bloated pig, with an ugly front end that's already dying for a redesign.
As for right now though, I hope to keep my lowly '98 GT as my daily for a few years (wife gets the next car, '08+ something, hopefully/probably C-class) and then at that point life will hopefully be stable enough where once hers is paid off, I can upgrade into an '11+ Mustang/370Z/whatever.

Re: Does anyone here use their thirdgen as a daily driver?
It'd probably be a different story if you had 75K sitting around to pick up a new Z06, or even 40-50K for a decent used '06 or so Z06.

While I can't even come close to buying a Corvette, I respect how fast they are and that people like them. I just have always thought they were just plain ugly (not to mention small. I don't even think I could fit in the 50's or early 60's vettes).

Re: Does anyone here use their thirdgen as a daily driver?
I do but only drive about 6 miles a day. I have a problem now with my 86 Firebird as the trunk pull down does not have any power going to it. I looked at the fusebox and see a plug with a red/white striped wire dangling loose. I am not sure if this should be plugged into somewhere and if this is the cause of my problem.

Re: Does anyone here use their thirdgen as a daily driver?
thier is a section for this. check to see if your getting power to it. if you arent then trace the wire back. could be a bad fuse or that wire.
