Satin Paint or back to factory gloss black again???
So I`m now about 98% engine work/trans work and interior work completed and over the past 3 years Ive been thinking really hard about my paint scheme not that buckles wont be scratching my fenders and longer. This will be my third paint job on this 86 black and gold iroc z28 over the past 14 years, I have always gone back with factory gloss black gold decals/stripes just like the factory had intedned to match my black interior. However while in primer i experimented a little with some ideas, and i have it narrowed down to 2 choices and Im looking for some opinions please.I live in the dfw area and have seen zero satin black rides. So one choice would be a satin black still keeping the original gold stripes, iroc door decals and badging my wheels were repainted 1 month ago, i think the satin paint along with the gold may be just enough pop and enough of a rat rod look to hold its own. 2nd choice go back gloss black and have a rebel flag on the roof painted in gold ghost along with the factory gold wheels decals and stripe kit.I know the ins and outs of satin paints and the trials of maintaining them and now that the mechanical work is coming to a close I wont mind the extra maintenance involved in the satins. Does anyone have any pics of satin camaros or any thoughts on these two paint schemes ?
The ride...a 1986 iroc z28 well built 350 forged crank,h-heam rods, clevite bearings, hellfire plasma molly rings, merlin heads,1.6 roller rockers, comp cam, fluid dampner, and so many other extras i cant even remember, dual stage n02,digital 6 plus ignition system, complete msd electronics,th400 reverse man valve body, trans brake, hidden guages, hidden bottles, stock hood and definatley a sleeper waiting for those high priced vettes to challenge

Re: Satin Paint or back to factory gloss black again???
I was thinking about satin black as well just for the agressive kind of trashy look lol. Bought I also thought about a real dark metallic, gunmetal I would say, with a light satin finish, finish it off with real deep maroon stripping or something. But I have a ton of work to do before any body work. Want to build the engine and surprise some people haha! Good luck on your choice!

I say back to stock or get the gold stripes.
I dont like the rebel flag at all.
(remember how people normally stereotype us third gen owners...)
You just cant go wrong with a stock appearance.

I always liked the satin black look but have never been a fan of the gold stripes, if mine were satin already, I would add some chrome. rims, door handles and maybe wipers. Not too much though, wouldnt want to look like a rapper

I'll tell you like 9ball(co-founder of ls1tech) told someone in youre same position.
Flat black looks good on high end vehicles because it's obvious that the owner has money but wanted something different. On thirdgen camaros/firebirds/monte carlos etc. it just looks like the owner was too poor to afford a real paint job.
I believe this would further the welfare sports car image the thirdgen is already famous for.
I also believe that putting chrome on a vehicle anywhere it wasn't factory installed for that body style is just tacky and low rent. Has anyone here ever been impressed by that stupid chrome strip people put on there door trim? Chrome windshield wipers---seriously?
Different strokes for different folks.

I've said it a hundred times and I'll say it again. Flat black cars are like redheaded women. They're either drop dead gorgeous or butt ugly. There is NO half way or kinda sorta. It's gotta have a perfect body with the proper stance to even come close to pulling it off, otherwise it will just look like a POS.

Re: Satin Paint or back to factory gloss black again???
Thanks for the thoughts about the welfare of third gen owners and concern for our image.... but Im still leaning on the satin black rat rod look, I think Ill just say the hell with those who dont like it,
the more i think about it the more i like it and thats enough for me i asked for the thoughts on it, but when it comes down to it, i guess really its such a personal things with cars and what one man or woman likes maybe way off from the rest of mankind thats what makes building cars and trucks so cool.i think i can pull this off nicley and make a huge aggressive statement with it. like one of yall said, its got to be as clean as a whistle, but.....itll be also mean as hell look.i live in a very very well to do neighborhood in north dallas and i cant wait till the grandmaws see me pull it out on the street hell i might just throw flames out the exhaust for the shock and awe of it !!! Wake up grandma!!! Troubles living next door to you !!! lol lol lol
Anyways really , thanks alot for the input guys!!!

Re: Satin Paint or back to factory gloss black again???
One of the reasons the MFP Interceptor in the movie Mad Max looked so good was because some parts of it were flat black (like the spoilers and areas behind the wheels) and other parts were super glossy (like the hood and roof)
Maybe you could come up with a scheme like that. I saw one RS a while back where the owner went satin on the body and very shiny truck liner stuff on the Ground FX. It had a cool industrial look with satin aluminum wheels. That car is gone BTW, but I did get some parts off of it after it got wrecked in Northern Arizona.
Sorry I don't have pics, maybe another member has some of that car.

Re: Satin Paint or back to factory gloss black again???
i actually did try some sketches in a few gloss/satin finishes but couldnt come up with anything that said "now thats bad a$$" so i kinda ditched it, not that my warped mind wont come up with something in the future, but right now the only parts that are working are those old fried, burnt out ones that cant seem to draw

I thought it was alright but could be better. Maybe just window tint. I agree with Stroker also about the stance of the vehicle. A little lower on the front would look sick.

Re: Satin Paint or back to factory gloss black again???
Fyrchicken is the one that mentioned stance.
Your absolutely right, its all about looking GOOD. And IMO flat black usually doesn't. Done properly it can look great, but the whole satin black/chromed out sticker door jam wiperblades hood blister thing doesn't work for me.
I will admit, flat black doesn't look as tacky as jacked up rear ends with tires that hang 6" past the fenders, and sidepipes. I think its safe to say that fad is a thing of the past.
Nobody has to like your car but you!
Its not about how looking rich stroker, IMO

Re: Satin Paint or back to factory gloss black again???
I was actually thinking of doing this myself too. I don't want total flat but the satin i really really like. Might be too much to some people but I've always liked the look of a car that is totally blacked out or really close. I am thinking of getting black z06 rims, satin black paint, and tint. Looks good to me in my head, lol, we'll see later.
I would still really like to see another thirdgen that already has a satin finish though.

Re: Satin Paint or back to factory gloss black again???
i was dead set on getting a satin paint job on my car last year and no one could have talked me out of it. Checked the web for hundreds of pics of satin cars...loved them all!
went to a car show saw a few cars in person...... and errrr the only one that looked really good was one that was covered in vinyl ....the painted ones just didn't look as good.could put it down to bad paint job but i dont think someone would cheap out on a new lambo.
Any way dont go by pics on the web try and get a look at the real thing, you may just change your mind.Ended up paint mine a very shiny black

Re: Satin Paint or back to factory gloss black again???
Part of the reason that I was wanting to do satin is that I was hoping that it wouldn't show dents near as bad as shin black does, lol.

One thing Satin does show is the gaps between sheet metal. They will look bad unless they are near perfect. Especially around the doors and the hood.
I saw some chalkboard paint the other day. I wonder what that would look like LOL.
