Re: Installing ground effects on a 92 tbi bird???

I'm going through the same thing with my 89. it wont be difficult, basically they bolt on, but the door pieces use a bracket that bolts to the door, not sure bu the rear quarter pieces may use a braket as well. The front fender pieces dont, i had to replace one on my old 91 I had, bolts to the bottm fender and the front bumper cover, then used adhesive tape to stick on the fender itself, also you have to replace the front and rear bumpers so they match up with the ground effects, that will get costly on a 92 because the front bumpers is expensive and can be hard to find, especially the aero one for use with the ground effects, rear bumper w/ areo is easy to find, seen at least a couple on ebay right now. hope this helps. I wanted to convert my 89 to the 91-92 style, but figured it would be too expensive, and just gathering up all the parts would be a pain in the ***

so its a 92 bird without factory ground effects? you realize its incredibly rare right? like 1 of 26 or something like that.

It's not that rare, but the 91-92 GFX look goofy anyway. When you factor in the unobtainium front fender GFX, it'd be silly to convert the car. They're mostly cosmetic and dead weight anyway.

Re: Installing ground effects on a 92 tbi bird???

the aero nose, is cleaner looking in the front, the openings flow inward to the point, rather than looking like little grills in there, also the bottoms of the sides bow out slightly to match up with the ground effects, here are a couple pics, first one is the regular non aero, second is the aero nose. Also the non aeros arent very rare, just usually you see the ground effects cars instead, personally I love the aero looking birds better, the body style of the nose seems to flow much better with the ground effects, the ones without then seem to look like the nose is to long for the car.

Re: Installing ground effects on a 92 tbi bird???

The ground effects themselves have a metal bracket that is tack welded to the body below the door opening. I just got through pulling the entire set of a wrecked '87. My '87 Formula has ground effects that someone put on without the metal bracket. I don't know about the '91-92 style, but the '85-89 style will start to sag after a while if you don't get that bracket welded on with them.

It's not awful, but laying on your back drilling out all the little spot welds on that bracket you begin to question your decision making process. Why do I know? I did it this evening. Not too bad once you get the hang of it though. The rest is gravy.

or you could probably bolt the bracket on or sheetmetal screw it. then cover in a good rust inhibitor to keep it all safe.

I personally like how the 91-92 look, and you dont see many so its unique. But yes, the fender GFX are stupid hard to find

Re: Installing ground effects on a 92 tbi bird???

The ground effects break EZ and then they are a bitch to replace. I wish my bird did not have them. One side is great, but I have a small chip broken on the other side. I am wondering if other years 89 to 90 effects will work as a replacement. Again, I suggest you do not get the ground effects, they break to EZ! >>Todd
