welder questions...my new one won't work

Hey guys,

I wanted to cover all my bases before I take my welder back in a little bit to exchange it. I bought a MIG 220 volt welder from harbor freight on 1/28/10 and just now getting to use it.

I installed a hospital grade 220 v receptical on the end so it would plug into the receptical in my shop.

Unit powers up just fine, I know I have the correct wire and nozzle. Wire feeds good, and My ground is good.

My problem is that it won't strike an arc, it's completly dead when I touch the wire to the bare steel to weld.

I know I'm not crazy, but want to check with you guys to make sure I have done everything I'm supposed to do before I chalk this up as a defective unit.

Never buy tools from harbor freight. Their little stuff is great, but I have 4 of their racing jacks and I take 2 of them back every year cause they break. No actual collapsing while in use but it gets harder to pump and/or just won't pump some times.....

I understand what it feels like to be broke, I'm in high school. But sometimes you just can't skip out on certain tools.
