Is It Worth Fixing up?

Hey everyone, ive read a ton the last two months on TGO but this is first time i posted. last week i got an 87 z28 from a local shop here in town i traded a golf cart for it haha. it's 99% all there the only things missing is ttop bag and rear z28 emblem. the car is rough, i guess it had been sitting in a field for bout 4 years i was told, ttops leaked and headliner is ruined. seats and carpet seem fine just extremely dirty! i am planning on possibly fixing it up butn im not sure if its worth the time. as far as i can see the body has no rust spots that have ate through just a little surface rust on top where paint faded. im not sure yet if it runs due to starter being seized. hope to find out sometime this week/weekend. if you hasve any ideas just let me know. i will try to get some good pictures of it as soon as it dries up here. im paralyzed so getting out this time of year sucks! lol.

Re: Is It Worth Fixing up?

Well, looks like you got some work. Its deffinatly worth getting it driving. There will most likley be more problems with it the deeper you work on it. I would start with replacing the starter and battery. Look into the tranny fluid and see if it smells burnt or discolored. (should be bright red...). Also check the antifreeze, see if it looks clean and bright, make sure theres not discoloration due to oil.

Don't forget to get rid of the old gas & get fresh in!! ( if there's any left )

Old varish for gas doesn't play well with fuel pump, injectors, filter.
Keep us informed & Good Luck!!

Re: Is It Worth Fixing up?

hell yes it's worth fixing up. On another subject it looks like you are unsure how to change a starter (and probably other things on the car). It sounds like this isn't your daily driver, so go to wal mart and get a socket set and a set of metric wrenches and learn to do it yourself. You already have the greatest tool in front of you a person could have, the internet and especially this website. Parts are generally pretty cheap for these cars and someday when you need a starter in your daily driver you will be able to save some money there so this car might be invaluable down the road for you with all you learn from it. Keep us updated it sounds like a fun car.

I do know how to change the starter.. I rebuilt my first engine when I was 11. I'm highly mechanically inclined. I raced outdoor mx nationals for 3 years and did all my engine work myself at age 13 up. I can't work on stuff by myself though now. If u read all the post u would see I'm paralyzed. It's all good though I will be sure to keep updated though!!

It's always worth someone's time to bring back another Camaro to road worthy standards. Keep up the work.
From one 87 Z28 owner, to another!!

Man, have you got your work cut out for you! But so awesome to see another being rescued rather than being torn down for scrap metal. Always a pleasure to hear of fellow "maro rescuers"
Keep up the work, and fill us in on when the tear down restoration begins!

Lol I've been AAALLL over the forums trying to solve all these blasted electrical problems.

This will definitely be a 'tear down' and restore project, from top to bottom, everything besides the engine and tranny is basically ruined

Well I will say this...it definitely makes me appreciate my car. lol. It sucks that the tops leaked, you really need to check the floor pans for rust, if theres bad rust in there you may as well part it out and scrap it, unless you have some damn good welding skills.

Car: I have an 88 IROCZ. Also an 87 IROC
Engine: none, but want LS2
Transmission: none, but want 6 spd.
Axle/Gears: 88-9" not complete, 87- 10 bolt
Re: Is It Worth Fixing up?

Well I am new to this forum, but I say its worth a shot.. If you could see what I am starting with you would think you have a gem... I picked up a rolling 88 IROC for 300, with no motor, tranny, or interior. But it has a great body and all the ground effects are perfect and bumpers. I use to ride in an 87 IROC of my friends in high school and always wanted one of my own, and being a father of 6 kids its hard to spend alot of money, so she's going to take a long time for me to get her how I want her, so don't give up bro. take care....

you bought new seals and still leaked? might have put them in wrong, and maybe type of adhesive you used also. i know you should not put your ttops on for atlest 12 hrs for the adhesive to fully dry and it will give you a better surface area applied to the glass, therefore preventing leaks better.
