trying to get an idea of what a ram air one hood would look like on my 88 gta, ive been looking but no luck, ive found 91-92, but thats not what I want. Im trying to decide on a ram air I and a ram air II hood, ive got the 4th gen spoiler on it now.

Re: Picture request: ram air I 85-90 t/a

In my opinion I have never really seen a ram air hood that looks good on 3rd gen cars, they just don't seem to flow well with the body lines of a 3rd gen but some obviously look better than others. That is just my opinion which I know is not what you're looking for, but I'm not sure which one this is but I think it looks the best since it's the most subtle. http://www.hawksthirdgenparts.com/fi...e-instock.aspx

im not asking peoples opinions, im asking for some pictures of a ram air 1 hood on an 85-90 car, the link to hawks doesnt help, that is a 91-92 car.
I need the hood for clearance, not for performance or looks.

Stephen, link doesnt work.

Re: Picture request: ram air I 85-90 t/a

I bought a ss hood from hawks for my 86, I like the look, I also needed the clearence for the carb. The fit is just TERRIBLE, just had the car painted yesterday and my guy has did nothin but complain about how bad the hood fits and the amount of time he spent sanding. LOOK at other options.

Check with member strc09, he has a RAI hood on his 87-90 GTA. Did a quick search but he has moved or deleted most of his photobucket pictures so they're not showing on the boards. PM him and ask.

that looks like the Suncoast hood....note how the nostrils sit back from the front edge of the hood. The ASCD hood has the nostrils start at the very front edge.

The RA1 hood does look best on the 85-90 Trans AMs because the lines flow better like it was meant to be there. Yes, I have had some fitment issues with mine because of a couple different reasons. 1) The hood was prepped and painted while the car was in another location being dyno'd so it wasn't properly fitted. 2) I don't think they used flexing stuff in the paint to allow me to put weight on the corners above the lights so it would sit flush. Other than those two issues I have no other major problems with it. There are others that have the same hood I have and it looks great. I'm hoping to get my car into paint/body in the next year so the hood minor hood issues I do have will be corrected.

Yeah my bad man, it is a Ram Air II. Just posting a Ram Air hood. I believe I ordered it from Hawks. I think I got both the spoiler and the hood from there. As for fitment, I was in a wreck right before the picture was taken, and the hood fit pretty well after. I got the hood done at the same shop that did the whole frontend, and they said it required a lot of work. They were actually pretty heated about it because it was a friend's shop and he was doing it for a reduced rate. But overall, I am very happy with the hood.

ive heard that about hawks hoods, i ordered one awhile ago, it got to my body shop and they sent it back! for 500+ you would think it would fit better. you can buy carbon fiber for imports for 500. But anyway, the hood fitment in the pic is thebest ive seen! im considering going through ram-air-hoods.com for mine, hopefully it wont need to much work.

Yeah in the picture it does look pretty good now that I go over it. Only problem that I've had so far is a few stress cracks. Not sure what they are caused from, as they are in a strange place. I dont know if that is from the quality of the fiberglass or the prep work at the shop. Anyhow, I am looking into getting some body work done on the car, which I will also try to get these cracks fixed.

Re: Picture request: ram air I 85-90 t/a

I have an ASCD hood that I grabbed off of a member (JeremyNYR). He sold it for a few reasons, one of them was fitment. I wanted the look and I'll massage it to make it decent, but my car is far from a showpiece, so I'm not overly concerned.

You said you wanted the hood for clearance. How much do you need? I don't think that hood will provide that much clearance, the rise is only *maybe* an inch? If you're close, then it will be good, if you need 2 inches or so, I don't think that hood will give you want you want. Its sitting in the shop, I can shoot you a pic of the underside if you want, just PM me.

I'm not sure what your saying there, but I HOPE it isn't that you think the RAII looks better than the RAI on 85-90 TAs!

RAII doesn't look good at all, missing the 2 lower opening that were in the fascia of the 4th gens. Mold the RAII hood with all 4 openings in the hood & then it might look decent on the 91/92 'birds.

That's exactly what he said. I thought about the 4 nostrils when I first bought the hood but they sit too far back. Looks fine with only 2 anyway.

I do have pictures firechicken but my body panels are misaligned on the front end. Car will be in the body shop at the end of this week so i'll let them fix all of that. Also I have underhood pictures, just not on this computer.

Put all 4 in the hood then, like my Tahoe's hood had them....

What lower holes? The RAI is designed after the LT1 WS6... which did NOT have lower holes in the front facia. IMHO the RAII hoods don't look good on any Thirdgen.

1997 WS6:

The only thing I don't like about the RAI hoods is the cowl area.

DUH! I was obviously referring to the RAII hood. Typo. All you did was say exactly what I said. Go back & re-read my post.....All you basically did was say the same thing I did.

My 1st & last line clearly indicates that I don't think the RAII hood looks better on 3rd gens.

Nice edit... you clearly said RAI in my quote of yours. I had no idea what you were referring to.

Here is what I quoted:
Of course I edited it for future readers, didn't try to hide my Edit and even clearly said so....TYPO. Not only did I say TYPO, the board software SHOWS that I edited it! Besides...Do you really think I'm that dumb to imagine 2 extra holes?

Your Quote already showed it, so it wasn't like I was trying to hide it or anything.....

Like I said. In my FIRST & THIRD line I was clear. And you bust my ***** over a single letter..... 'I'. Had you bothered to READ, you'd have focused on the 2 god, clear lines, not on the single missing letter!

Be above that.

I'd have to see it photoshopped first. I can somewhat invision it in my head, but don't know if I like it or not. I'll put up a chop request later.

That's what I was figuring, neither hood would be good for additional clearance. I think that both hoods RAI and RAII can work on the car, depends on what you are going for. The RAI is more of a stock-looking improvement over the factory hood, not too extreme, but something with a little more attitude. I think the RAII hood is suited to the more extreme cars, sort of like snorkel hoods on drag cars. It would look silly on a standard street car, but looks good on a nasty prostreet car. That's my , take it for what its worth.

Actually, the RAI should give a slight more engine clearance over the RAII, because the middle of the RAII is at the stock height of a stock hood. Whereas the RAI hood at least gives you a bit more room in the middle for a taller intake, if you need it.

A Tahoe and Firebird don't exactly look the same Stephen...some things look good on one car but not another. In your case, I don't like how it looks on your Tahoe. It could however look good done to the bird.
