best way to get bondo off plastic?
I got a '85 iroc last week that was only in need of some minor body work. I've already done most of the work but the P.O. put bondo over the rear bumper cover
. He told me he backed into his truck and he put some bondo over the dent he made. So before i try and take it off I'm wondering whats the best way to get bondo off the bumper cover. any advise is appreciated

My favourite is a coarse wire wheel, but a disk grinder works wonders.

Wasn't paying much attention when i posted that.. I would say new bumper, mainly because the flexible filler isn't cheap...

buyin a new bumper cover would probably be easier but i cant find one for cheap anywhere, i have one from a '83 z28 and a '92 rs but neither of them look right on a iroc. I'l try sanding it off later today

I know this sounds silly and painstakenly long but you could wetsand it off with 400 grit paper. It will take a while but you would be surprised unless it is like an inch thick. If its really thick, just grind off a little with a grinder and sand off the rest. Even if you cut into the plastic a little, you can fill with some epoxy that is made for these bumpers.

Re: best way to get bondo off plastic?
dont give up hope, i personally would hold on until i find another bumper. But since your going to replace it i would start sanding the bondo by hand with 80grit sandpaper just to see if i can be saved. hand sand it so you will have more controll and wont damage the bumper to much.
good luck.

Re: best way to get bondo off plastic?
I personally would just take the bumper off flip it over and take a hammer to the inside of it, try to break off as much as possible. then sand the rest with 80grit DA. Then after that is done get a heat gun/ or I guess you could use a torch and heat the bumper up and try to pop it out as much as possible. After you get it out as much as you can get a tube of FLEXIBLE Plastic Parts Repair from 3M, then follow insturctions on the tube and apply. After that sand that entire corner of the bumper down with 180grit and then prime. Wet sand with 600grit and then paint. Personally that's what I would do, should take you less then a weak and if done right it should last and you will never know you had a dent there.

Re: best way to get bondo off plastic?

Alright so i had some time today to take the bumper off and start sanding, halfway thru sanded the whole chunk of bondo came off. Now that the dent in the bumper is fully exposed is there anyway i can just pop it out?

Re: best way to get bondo off plastic?
thanks for the info guys, got the dent out and the holes filled in. Btw it wasnt me that drilled into the bumper, that was the PO's failed attempt to pull out the dent

I have never used that 3m Mix, always used another flexible fliller for that application. Looks like it came out well.

Re: best way to get bondo off plastic?
The 3m stuff worked pretty good, i really didnt need that much of it. I just wanted to fill in the holes that the PO made wen i tried to pull out the dent that was there.

and then use the flexibile parts repair to smooth it out after you get the dent out as much as possible.
