Trans Am Hood...

I love the Trans Am hood. I must say I'm a bit torn on the front vents due to the fact that they are purely cosmetic. I need to put a different hood on my wife's car. She currently has the hood that was on my Formula 350. It is a Cowl Induction, 2 1/2-3" With vents running along the sides. To me it's beautiful. It's the only one I've seen. If you saw it I'm sure you would like it. It makes the car look so menacing!!! Anyways. I plan to weld up the vents on the Trans Am hood I picked up at the junkyard. Only the Front Vents, as I like the one's on the sides. Her car is white and this one is black. I threw the original away... Out of stupidity!

Any thoughts? Has this been done? Do you know the thickness of the stock sheetmetal? Can I use something thinner?

Re: Trans Am Hood...

is it the daytona hood, first one on this page
http://www.showcars-bodyparts.com/fi...8292pics1.html

IMO, its the second ugliest hood available for the 3rd gen, second only to the RAII

stock hood is probably 20-22 gauge

Re: Trans Am Hood...

After much thought I scrapped the idea of Welding the Front Vents.. and After much deliberation I scrapped the idea of ever putting on a hood with useless vents.. So this makes Two Half Decent GTA hoods I've dumped.

What a waste!

Re: Trans Am Hood...

Is the Bulge Hood from my 89 Formula 350 worth keeping, not to fond of it anymore.

Considering a IMSA hood instead...

Re: Trans Am Hood...

The front "vents" are actually scoops that dump into the front reinforcement section (no idea what to actually call it). If you put a hole in that part in a usefull area the hood becomes functional. I've thought about having a body shop cut mine right in front of my air filter to make it sort of a ram air hood or use it as a fresh air inlet to lower underhood temps. I'm not shure if the rear vents are as easy to be made functional because I don't know if they are open like the fronts and I can't take them out because my hood was repainted with them still on. There was actually a discussion about this not too long ago that might explain what I'm trying to say better

Doesn't actually seem like it's been made functional yet...

Re: Trans Am Hood...

True. Thats 'cause I'm too chicken to cut mine up myself and I have more important things to do to the car at the moment than getting a bodyshop make the hood functional. You get what I'm talking about tho. Right?

Re: Trans Am Hood...

No Totally, Man. I had paid a body shop to make the vent covers, which I had planned to use to close the front vents. When I abandoned the idea, the guy had the nerve to charge me for the cut out's.

Keep in mind that's in addition to the price of the hood.

It doesn't seem, like the GTA hood has ever been made functional though, looks like the idea has floated around.

Maybe I'll sack up one day and be the first then . I want to get my rotted wing replaced so it'll probably happen then. I love the look of the hood and they're too hard to find (up here at least) in good condition for me to risk hacking it up.Name: IMG_0640.jpg

The way I want to do it is to cut the brace (pictured) not behind the latch, but just to the outside of where it starts to rake toward the windshild on the right side and add a wall or block off of some sort to aim the nice fresh air right into my intake which has an open element filter right there. I'll be happy to take pictures of my own with the area I want cut out marked off if you like.

Re: Trans Am Hood...

you realize that area is right in front of the core support? it wont do much of anything at all if you cut it open.

I'm not getting it cut where the added lines are in the pic. I just used that pic to show the brace (probably not the best wording). I will be getting it cut on the right side between where the brace starts to rake back toward the windshield and the hood bumper dimple on the back side of the brace. The opening will be DIRECTLY above my airfilter aimed at the filter element. At least most of the air that comes out of the opening will go into my intake. All if I get off my *** and make a proper heat sheild for it. And none of it can possibly be blocked by the core support

Re: Trans Am Hood...

Which Model Firebird's came with the Aluminum Power Bulge? Besides using a Magnet, are there any other markings on the hood to specify that it is indeed an aluminum hood?

Re: Trans Am Hood...

Without some kind of scoop sticking up from the front vents, will they even pickup any extra air or will they just be another spot to draw air from?

Re: Trans Am Hood...

I like the front vents and at the same time I don't. If I ever get a differant hood i'm just going to get a cowl hood as I like the nice smooth lines of them.

I think it wouldn't be much different from the 1st gen Viper hood scoops (or whatever you want to call them)

The T/A hood "vents" even have finns angled to direct air in.

Hmm, any photos of an IMSA hood? I think that's what it's called. It's like a mirrored Power Bulge
