floor pan drain plugs

Well i have decided to go start working on the body of my bird and went to town pulling carpet and plastics. and i noticed that there are a few oval holes in the floor where i would suspect that plugs should cover them. i know i need to seal these holes but can i just wield sin sheet metal over them or is there a place that sells these for our cars, i looked around and found second gen f body plugs but not third. and should i use paint stripper to cover the floors with that por15 stuff? or can i paint over the existing paint?

Re: floor pan drain plugs

Check hawks might have the plugs or go to the bone yard and pull some out. Also you could just weld a cover over the hole. And paint.is up to you if you don't have any rust just paint over what is there.

Re: floor pan drain plugs

check the bottom of your carpet, may have stuck to it, also for the floors? POR-15! yes, por15 will go over existing paint, just hit it with marine clean first!

Yup grind and weld. Since you have rust por15 sounds like a good idea. You can use a wire wheel to remove any loose stuff

Re: floor pan drain plugs

The JY in Poulsbo has lots of third gens, I'm sure most of them still have the plugs. Should only cost a few $.
If that sticky stuff is still on the floor that they used to seal the plugs, I have found that heat makes it much easier to remove.

Re: floor pan drain plugs

I never understood the purpose of the drain plugs...

They put a hole in your floor, but it's covered with that sealer "sheet" so it can't drain anything anyway

Its mainly for the factory when they run the car thru the huge vats of liquid it will all drain out quickly and therefore dry faster

I've always wondered what those were for, it's good to finally know. But now I have a new question: why do they put the cars through huge vats of liquid?

Re: floor pan drain plugs

I believe one is an acid to remove all oils and weld slag, the next kills the acid, the third is self etching primer.

Re: floor pan drain plugs

This is good to know. I have a big rust spot near one of my drain plugs and want to just weld it up. So that is what i will do!
