firebird fender compatability

ive been searching for this answer on im not really having any luck. i have a 92 firebird with the ground effects. both my right and left fenders need replace. i might be able to save the nose with some body work. my question is this...do i have to get fenders from a 91 or 92 firebird or do fenders from 82-92 work. im having a hell of a time finding fenders that someone doesnt want $300 a piece for. other question is if they arent compatable can i just put an older cars fenders and nose on my car? the fenders and nose are the only thing wrong with this car. its a 5.0 5 speed with 98k miles on it. im the 3rd owner. any help or direction with this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Re: firebird fender compatability

82-92 will fit. The only differences that you will encounter, is in the ground fx. Obviously those car tat never had ground fx would need the holes drilled for yours to fit & there was a change in the mounting holes, but that is just a matter of drilling new ones. You do not have to fill the old ones if you don't want to, since they'll be hidden behind the ground fx & nobody will ever know.

Re: firebird fender compatability

For the 3rd gens, they are very different. From the center of the wheel opening back, they fit. But the Firebird noses drop a god 3"-4" and are very different. If put on a Camaro nose, you'd hafta swap both & put a complete nose on it as well. A Transmaro. Don't laugh......Its been done!

Re: firebird fender compatability

There is another difference I found while bolting the front bumper brace of my 89 to my 84. The front lip of the fenders of the 89 is flat, but on the 84 there is an angle under the top hole. The bumper cover brace follows the line of the lip so it's different as well. Hard to explain without a picture, but basically the front lip is slightly different between early models and late models, I guess it changed in 1985).
It's not a big problem, but it will require some hammering to it correctly.

There's an 82 Transmaro around here for sale, it's shocking The wheel arches are different between Firebirds and Camaros, they're more squared on the latter.

Re: firebird fender compatability

tanks everyone for your input and fast responses. that definately helps me out and expands my fender search. i guess ill keep it to years 85-92. ive had a 92 camaro and now i have a 92 firebird so i kinda wanna keep the firebird front end. although it would be kinda cool to see a transmaro

Re: firebird fender compatability

transmaro's sound like a good idea but when you see them they never look rite. besides the wheel wells not matching you also got the ground affects. don't get me wrong i have no problem with putting camaro parts on a firebird or visa versa. but if your gonna do it you should atleast make it look rite.

The only differences in holes or no holes, to mount the ground fx....And the location of the holes did vary between years of ground fx.

But basically? Yes, all the fenders will interchange.

Yes, any 85-92 fender will be a direct bolt on. However, the top mounting hole on 82-84 fenders sticks out farther than the later models. Because of that, the front bumper will not fit flush with the top of the fender.

If you have an 82-84 car and 82-92 fender will fit. If you have an 85-92 only an 85-92 fender will be a direct bolt on.

The speedo itself will work. However, if you're swapping the entire cluster a couple things will be different. A V6 tach won't read right in a V8 car and V6's have 80psi oil gauges while V8's have 60 psi gauges.

Re: firebird fender compatability

All '86 and up Firebird speedos are electric so if your cars has a mechanical speedo somebody must have swapped it from an 82-85 car.

Re: firebird fender compatability

Yes, an '84 front bumper will work. Because of the way the fenders are, you can put an 82-84 front bumper on a later car but can't put an '85-up bumper on an earlier car without modifying the fenders.

I know i am digging this thread out of the archives but this is the exact issue i am trying to figure out. My car has had a gap at the top of the fender (between the fender and bumper) for years and i would like to finally fix it. It is an 85 but years ago when i did the bodywork i replaced both front fenders. I am not sure about the one fender but the other came from an 87 or 88, but bother fenders have that piece of metal that sticks out where the top mount hole is.

I am confused though as you are saying the changeover year was 85. That doesn't make sense since the bumper is 85 and the fenders are newer than that.

I was thinking the changeover year may have been 86 and i need a bumper from an 86-90?

Any help would be appreciated.

thanks.
