Rear Hatch

Ok so i have a 1991 camaro rs. The problem is that i cant get the back hatch open..I dont have the button or anything and the cable in the back has been cut >. The previous owner just said he never opened it anyway so he didnt care. Is there any possible way to open the hatch so i can atleast get into the hatch so i can put my stereo stuff in.

Re: Rear Hatch

You'll have to climb in trough the back seat & hotwire the latch release. Not sure what cable you are referring to, since that implies a manual pull ting like for the hood, and there is no manual pull release for the rear hatch.

Re: Rear Hatch

There is a small cable that runs from the key lock to the lock on them all.

Gonna be hard to do it from the inside as the plastic stuff has to come out to gain access, and there are 2 screws on top by the lock latch.

The plastic wraps over the top & goes under the hatch, with 2 screws holding it down PLUS there is a hole in it for the latch to go through & hook to the hatch. No way to get it off, with the hatch closed.

Your pretty much screwed, as far as opening the hatch & saving that plastic. You are going to have to cut through the plastic to reach the cable.

Second thought for Camaros (which you have).....

You might be able to flip your plate down, drill a hole in the sheetmetal big enough to reach something trough. But that depends on where the cable is broke. If it is broken at the key cylinder end, all you need to do is get ahold of the cable & pull, releasing the hatch. If is broken somewhere in the middle, you can do the same thing. If it is broken at the hath latch end? Your screwed & the plastic has to come off.

Not a fun problem!

Re: Rear Hatch

I don't have a key for my hatch, but the lock cylinder has been removed from the hatch itself so I can open it with a flat screwdriver. My question is: how do you get the lock cylinder out of the plastic sleeve that it sits in so I can take it to a locksmith and have a key cut??
