NEW Firebird Hood Options: WE NEED YOUR INPUT ** VOTE **

The hood projects are dead. I made the serious mistake of trusting a friend, who turned out to be a fiend. Should the need arise, you'll hear more about this...

Re: NEW Firebird Hood Options: WE NEED YOUR INPUT ** VOTE **

My opinion still stands on a similar hood to the camaro heat extractor.....not very high like a big cowl, but maybe have it rise an inch and a half over the stock hood height and have the single heat extractor in it. Picturing this, I think it's the best idea so far.

I can't stress enough though how it can't resemble just a raised cowl with a heat extractor. I won't buy a high hood. Slightly higher than stock in the center is what I'm looking for. Should be able to maintain plenty of engine clearence with just a slight raise. Wish I could see a nice photo shop of the design. Have a picture in my head, but I don't own photoshop!

And it would be cool if you could eliminate the center hood line and just make it flat all the way across with the single heat extractor. I think it would add a lot of character being flat instead of creased!

Perhaps the 'chops are misleading - I'm picturing only about a 2" rise overall. Not a big cowl by any means. Those are just the only 'chops of the basic design.

Yes they are. Look to be about 3.5" in the chops. See my edited post on the center crease line.....I'm curious to what other people think of this idea?

Personally I'm kind of torn on it - I think it flows REALLY well the the faint line on the nose - I agree it shouldn't stick out, but I think a faint line would look much better than no line...

Opinions?

It may just be me but Im not a big fan of the heat extractor. However I do like the sharp edges in the #2 photo. I agree that a faint line needs to be there to match up with the front clip.

Re: NEW Firebird Hood Options: WE NEED YOUR INPUT ** VOTE **

Al those 'chops were done by me, on my GTA.

The 1st one, the Jongbloed/Sunoco style hood, is 'chopped from a pic of a real hoods pic. The real hood is only what? 1.5"? 2?

And FYRCHKNs hood is only a 2.5" rise (i think).
Build thread on TGO LINK HERE. You can see it as it was built & before it had the heat extractor added, in that thread.

Re: NEW Firebird Hood Options: WE NEED YOUR INPUT ** VOTE **

I'm not much of a fan of putting cowl styl hoods on firebirds. They just dont seem right. save that for the camaro guys. I know your looking for somthing diff an new but you need to take in to acct the history of each brand so when someone sees it they will know exactly what kind of car it is.
I like the 96-7 ram air hoods on the 3rdgen but the rear of the current hoods like that just suck.
They have way to much center body line and they are way to tall towards the rear.
they should only rise maybe 1" (above the stock hood) across the rear by the windshield.
ditch the body line and make it waaaaaaay more like the 96-7 hood and you'd have a sure winner.

I'm kinda torn.

FYRCHKN's hood stops before going all the way back, because he left the rear edge intact to maintain structural rigidity. Whereas the Jongbloed/Sunoco goes all the way back.

On one hand I love the Jongbloed & has been my obsession for YEARS, just couldn't get any manufacturer to commit to building it. Closest I got was the offer that if I got 10 people to pony up the $$$ before actual design beyond my PS even started. Not gonna get 10 people to do that & HOPE they like what they already paid for.

On the other hand I do like the sharper lines of the FYRCHKN hood. The heat extractor dip I'm not totally sold on. The sharp lines & no heat extractor was pretty cool.

But notice it doesn't go all the way back. I think a 'glass one would be better if it went all the way back like the cowl hoods & the Jongbloed/Sunoco does, although it does give it the "edgy"/different-than-other-cowl-hoods look to it.

Were you planning on offering only a bolt on? Or a Pin-On version as well? Price is gonna be my biggest hurdle.

Regardless of the hood we do, it would go all the way back to the end of the hood.

We can make any of them plain, but then it just looks like a cowl hood, right?

As for the bolt on/pin on, our molds will be a top and bottom. I suppose we could offer a pin on version using just the top mold, but structural rigidity will be far less. Its not going to crack, but I'm sure you'd see it flex going down the road, hitting bumps.

Re: NEW Firebird Hood Options: WE NEED YOUR INPUT ** VOTE **

The more I think about it.....

The FYRCHKN hood all the way back and maybe a longer heat extractor dip (just watch out for STB & Tpi plenum/carb air cleanerance) in it gets my vote! (change 1 vote for Jongbloed into 1 for FYRCHKN vote)

Anyone else? If I've only got 15 ppl interested in the majority, its not really worth building (considering only a very small % may actually buy).

-1 on Sunoco +2 on FYRCHKN

I changed my vote ( Post #14 ) & so did 89-bird ( Post #17 dunno what he voted on to start with)

I hope this thread will not be THE deciding factor on a new hood design getting made....

I origanaly went with the Sunoco hood with the heat extractor but like the look of the FYRCHKN hood better . The straight lines fit our cars better than the rounded lines in my opinion as the rounded lines would look better on a 4th gen .

I hope this doesn't turn into another one of those "not enough people interested so the deals off" kind of thing. Bottom line is, if you offer a hood that no one else does, it'll sell whether it's 500 right off the bat or a few every month. There has always been plenty of people showing interest in a new hood for the firebirds so over time I'm sure the sales will be there.

Not interested because those both accentuate the fact that my bumper doesn't have those nifty body creases. My hood already stands out enough even factory. Nice to see people producing aftermarket parts though! Good luck!

Nah, I just thought for sure with as much conversation on the designs that we had, I figured more people would be voting. Hopefully I'll be picking up a Formula this weekend and have a car for fitment.

WOW! My hood made the line up? I'm honored...and speechless!

I read through the thread and as for the questions about the rise of my hood, it's 1.5". I used a 2" X 6" to keep the uniform rise all the way back. Oh, and it's currently on my bone stock V6 Bird and the extractor dip clears the air intake plenum nicely.

Re: NEW Firebird Hood Options: WE NEED YOUR INPUT ** VOTE **

I love the first hood "the Sunoco style" and would definitely buy one if the quality was spot on!!!

I had wanted a RAII hood once upon a time.... Thought that it would be great for the cooling effect, but these days I think that it's just "too much" visually and takes away from the original styling.... Not to mention alot of people have fitment/quality issues.

Would you consider putting the GTA vents into the Sunoco? That would look SWEET!

1 vote for Sunoco!!!

Prices will be competitive with the other fiberglass hoods on the market.

I have a question would any of the hoods allow for a functional ram air setup for the trans am/GTA?

Not unless you modify it somehow. The heat extractor hood is for getting hot air out, not cooler air in.

That would be cool to integrate both somehow...the heat extractor with vents or ram air holes or one ram air intake like I've seen on some camaros....

Re: NEW Firebird Hood Options: WE NEED YOUR INPUT ** VOTE **

UGH! You made my GTA look ugly!

It will be the FYRCHKN hood that was settled on.
Here it is in raw, unfinished form and there will be some tweaks for the final design, but this gives you a good picture of it.

And a view from the inside, on the way home just a hour after putting it on. Temp ran 170/180, all the way home. 2-hr drive in 75 degree weather.
