Aligning rear hatch
Aligning rear hatch
OK, since I purchased my 1991 RS a few months ago my rear hatch glass has slowly shifted over to the LHS and the 2 spoiler pieces (Left and centre) are now touching.
I know it's the glass because I can stick a finger down the RHS and can't get the same finger into the LHS. I have read the tech artical on here, but after mucking around for hours it always goes back to the same position now (over to the left.)
I'm not 100% convinced the RHS hinge is properly aligned as it seems to sit at a very, very slight angle (just not perfectly horizontal, mayby 2-3 degree's askew) compared to the LHS one.
Is there some black magic secret I'm missing here?
Alternatively, does anyone have a good set of hinges I can purchase?
Best wishes,
Craig.

You must use urethane where the factory did on the hatch and glass. The pressure of the lift supports is too strong for butyl and those bolts to hold. The tech article is good but they missed that step. Be sure to use primer for urethane as well.

Before you buy new hinges, is the glass fitting in the opening? Is it misaligned or is it just the metal part of the hatch?

Re: Aligning rear hatch
There are two ways you can align your back glass. One way is to loosen the bolts connecting your glass to the hinges. You can unbolt the struts that hold the glass up to make it easier, so there isn't any pressure on the glass. Another way is to remove the upper trim piece between the headliner and the third brake light. Then you will have access to the bolts that connect the hinges to the car. There is a good bit of adjustment you can make when loosening these bolts.

Re: Aligning rear hatch
Sorry, forgot about what you said about glass being off. There has been some threads about the alignment of the glass on the sides. They never fit very well. I have a hard time believing that the hinges wear out that much. There's not enough metal in them to let the hatch move enough to cause that much change. But i have read where someone took their hinges off then put them in a vise to help move the glass toward the front. Be careful with bolts going through glass.
Could your latch need moving over? Any side adjustment at the rear will be controlled by the latch location. Hope this helps.

Re: Aligning rear hatch
Could the latch be moved over? Interesting question? I have not removed the rear plastics to find out if there is any adjustment. I intend on taking some shots tomorrow, and also intend on loosening both the glass and the hinges at the same time, as well as checking the rubber seal is correctly installed. That way all the common variables are loose, and hopefully one of them will come right. The hinge is definately a bit skewiff, I can tell just by comapring them both from the back. They are just not on the same horizontal plane. I'm just terrified of breaking this damn glass, I'd never get another one over here

Re: Aligning rear hatch
Yes there is adjustment up and down, and side to side. It's not likely that things just bent, shifted without being forced somehow. But I have seen several glass separating from hatch. If you have the motorized hatch latch it's possible that the sliders have fallen apart and let the center part of the assembly move over. Keep posting and I'll be glad to help. I don't want you to break your glass either.
One lift going bad can also cause hatch to shift to one side. You may want to check the left one, maybe swap sides and see if that changes anything. Try hatch with neither lift on. May be better to adjust latch if necessary this way.

Re: Aligning rear hatch
i have the same problem maybe i should start a new thread but i have tried all the hinges and the only thing left for me to try is the glass metal gluing approach. where would i get replacement glue and how would i know that it is properly aligned i cant tighten the bolts if it is closed up and lined up
