Okay to jack by front sway bar?

Seems very thick and solid. Doesn't flex really either. I can't really get my jack to the cross member so I've been doing this.

I wouldn't do or recommend it. BTW, there's a possibility that the bar on your car is hollow.

Re: Okay to jack by front sway bar?

I wouldn't jack it by the bar itself, but you can jack up underneath the mounting point on the frame, although, I wouldn't do it all the time. If the jack doesn't fit, get one that does!

Re: Okay to jack by front sway bar?

If you jack the bar you'll crush the bushing. It may take it a time or two if there's no choice but there's always another way.

Re: Okay to jack by front sway bar?

If you need the whole front end up? Buy/Make some ramps. Or jack 1 side up, put it on a jackstand, then jack the other side up & put it on a jackstand. If you have a stock Wonder Bar, don't jack it up by that either. It it stronger than the sway bar for jacking, but I still wouldn't do it.

You can jack up the whole rear end, but do it by the pumpkin, not the sway bar.

Re: Okay to jack by front sway bar?

I once straightened a stamped steel OE Wonderbar by sticking it between two blocks of wood, then putting a bit of my weight on it. I'd say it's certainly less substantial than, say, a solid 34mm sway bar. At any rate, as has been mentioned, neither is an appropriate jacking point.

Re: Okay to jack by front sway bar?

You need 2 jacks with a low car often, one just to get the engine cradle up a few inches to jack there, then again when ya wanna take it out.

Re: Okay to jack by front sway bar?

I always just up the front of my car by putting the jack under the K-member and then putting two jack stands under the A-frames.

Re: Okay to jack by front sway bar?

Drive onto some blocks of wood then put the jack under the front crossmember.

Re: Okay to jack by front sway bar?

My solution at home, before lowering.....

I had to add another layer to the bottom, 6' long, to get the tires up on there to keep the nose from hitting anywhere. Yes, my ramps are "kinda heavy".

2" x 12" x various length from 18" to 6'.

Re: Okay to jack by front sway bar?

Yeah, simple and easy. Will do from now on. What exactly is a K member? Is that the crossmember?

Re: Okay to jack by front sway bar?

The k member is the large bar behind the way bar that holds the engine.

Re: Okay to jack by front sway bar?

Thank you sir. Hope to get under my car this weekend to cure that front end popping, read it is possible I am missing bolts in the K member. Will also check the state of my sway bar and everything it connects to. Want to be certain I did not ruin anything.

Re: Okay to jack by front sway bar?

You are missing bolts in the k-member??? That is what holds your engine, which your transmission is attached to, it it supports the tranny too.

The coil springs press on it, so it supports/locates those.

The a-arms attach to it, so it supports those too.

What bolts are missing???

I too have read that losing bolts there is a possibility. Checking can't be a bad idea (I did. All in place).

Re: Okay to jack by front sway bar?

took a k-member out of a 89? TA recently and one bolt on the passengerside was broken, the broken piece didnt fall completely out, it was stuck a little, but more or less it was "missing", its defiantly possible.

Re: Okay to jack by front sway bar?

Sway bar looks fine. Jacked up by crossmember using wood blocks to get car up first. Off topic but which bolts am I looking for? Attached picture of what I saw underneath.

Re: Okay to jack by front sway bar?

I was also wondering what bolts. I tightened all of the ones on the triangles, an then tightened the two A frame ones, and also tried to tighten two 18mm bolts by the A frame. Only 2 bolts on each of the triangles needed to be tightened. Went out and drove it and it still does it. I must have missed some but I can't see anymore.
