Key won't turn in driver door?

I've had no problem all day with the lock. Then I went to unlock it and I can't turn the key at all. Key goes in fine, but it's won't budge. I have to go in the passenger side and unlock it from the inside. What could be wrong?

Re: Key won't turn in driver door?

frozen possibly mine dose that a lot. being that you can unlock it that means its not stuck, or maybe your key and driver side cylinder finally wore enough to not work.

Re: Key won't turn in driver door?

So what should I do? I don't want to force the key and break it or anything.

Re: Key won't turn in driver door?

heat it up some how and see if that works if it does not than bring your key to a locksmith and get the cylinder for your car and have it keyed and bring a lightly used key if you have one get a bunch of keys made hope this helps

Re: Key won't turn in driver door?

It's been cold all day long, but I've been locking it and unlocking it a few times today as I have to walked from my apartment to the parking lot back and forth. It's been working perfectly fine until it randomly decided to stop working. I'll try to heat it up somehow tomorrow.

if it still dose not work see if you hold the key forcefully up so the teeth on the key dig in better if it works like that its just wear

Re: Key won't turn in driver door?

Yah, that would be the best starting point is to get rid of the ice thats stuck in there (if there is any) if there is no convinent way of heating it up, you could always get an bottle/jug ice defroster and spray some on the lock cylinder, and then on the key and kinda wiggle the key around in there, not sure if that will work but its an idea, Good luck tho!

Re: Key won't turn in driver door?

Hopefully, with luck I'll wake up tomorrow morning and it'll work right! Hope the door doesn't get frozen shut again! I need to repair the hinges too (door sag/both doors) but the repair kits from TDS are expensive.

Re: Key won't turn in driver door?

pour hot water on it, then drive to the store and buy spray lube.
shot it into the key hole and roll window down and shoot at it on the backside.

I get frozen out every winter.

First time it happened I got mad, I busted my hatch motor and pulled off my pass side door handle trying to get in, when hot water works much better.

Re: Key won't turn in driver door?

shoot the door seals andor the places on the body behind the door where they touch.

They can get frozen to the car when you get a quick warm up then freeze and wont let it open, even when unlocked.

Re: Key won't turn in driver door?

Thanks for the help guys, first thing I do tomorrow is try some hot water and some wd-40 in the lock. If that doesn't work I'll get some lube and try that. I'll let you know what happens!

Re: Key won't turn in driver door?

Dry Graphite!
Last longer, lubes better you can get some in an aerosol spray can.

Take a look at the key, my old key is worn out where the pass works fine, but drivers side is about the same.
If i lift up on the key and wiggle a little it turns, but gets irritating. Just a worn out key haha.

Sad thing is, its impossible to cut a new key out of a worn out key. However, your local locksmith shop can cut a new key out of the lock cylinder itself, and they do have to have the lock cylinder in hand, some can take it out of the car for you if you'd rather not mess with it.

One more thing, new lock cylinders are cheap enough to pick up at your local Oriellys 2 lock cylinders+2 keys. Downside, lock cylinder on the hatch wont match.

It all comes down to what the original equipment looks like, if its just worn out, then you know your answer.

Re: Key won't turn in driver door?

Good news! I just went out there and it worked perfectly, didn't have to wiggle or anything. Proably just some snow or ice got in there and froze it up. I sprayed some wd-40 inside the lock and on the backside just for extra measure.

If it does mess up again, I do know Napa Sells the door key mechanisms in black and chrome. I replaced mine a while back. They come with keys also
