Anyway to open rear hatch without breaking anything?

Hey guys

Well I dont have a key for my recently purchased firebird and im wondering if anyone knows of a way to open it without having to break anything.

I need it open so i can swap in a different lock that i actually have the key for.

Any ideas?

I thought about calling a locksmith but i dont know how he would go about opening it either.

Someone tried to break into my T/A and they messed up the lock, so mine wont work even with my key. What I do to get in is I crawl to the back, and where the switch/light is that lights up the rear compartment, right behnd it is the lock. Remove the light/switch and get a flat-head screwdriver and stick it into where the rod from the key cylinder slides into the latch and turn the screwdriver counter-clockwise and when it "clicks", the hatch is open. Then just crawl back out and lift the hatch up.

GREAT! definitely gonna try this tomorrow.

I really didnt want to break the plastic covering the whole assembly. Had to open a hatch at a junkyard once and that was the only way to do it.

Thanks bradley

yeah dont have a hatch release lol

No problem, hopefully yours has the little light back there so you don't have to break the panel to get to it. The switch is held on with 2 philips-head screws, and the light just pulls out. The cylinder is actually behind the switch, so you may not have to take the light out.

Since you are replacing the lock you could try drilling the lock mechanism, there should be a how-to online somewhere...

I would check the console to see if the wiring harness is there even if you don't have the switch. short them to activate the latch(assuming its electric) and youd be on your way !!
