Never seen a white ground wire before - usually all grounds are black, or black with some color stripe. Here's wiring diags for most 3rd gens: http://www.austinthirdgen.org/index.php?pid=19

It was plugged into a black with orange stripe wire on late 89-early 91 models. It provides a switched ground to turn on and off the rear hatch light. If your 88 has the optional hatch light you'll have a manual switch to turn it on/off.

Re: 1988 firebird wireing

My GM shop manual shows only two white wires for the cargo area, one is the courtesy light ground and the other white one is the feed for rear wipers. You are talking about the white wire with a small black square plug on the end, right.
