t top rust fix

There is a little bit of rust on the black piece of the t bar on the inside of my car. I'm wondering if there is a way to take it off so I can sand it and paint it easier. I can take the three screws out on each one but after that I cant figure out how to take it out. I don't want to have to pull the weather stripping to get it off. Does anyone know how to take this piece off? Thanks

Re: t top rust fix

If I remember correctly some of thebolts are hiding under the weather stripping just soak the bolts in penetrating oil first so they don't get stripped

Hello, I hope you can see the yellow arrows I used to pin point the locations of the four screws that you have to remove to get the t-bar off. Not sure if you can see them with the weather stripping on. I removed my weather stripping because they previous owner put gobs of silicon all around the area. I was at the Carlisle car show yesterday and found some t-top weather stripping for $150 The yellow arrows point all 4 phillip screws that need to come out as well as the one's you can actually see. Good luck.

Re: t top rust fix

So I do have to take the weather striping off to get to it. I didn't want to have to do that. I guess I'll just have to be careful with it and stick it back on.

Re: t top rust fix

to simply answer your question - yes you do. The weather stripping goes right thru the t-top bar.. and you need to peel it back to get at the 4 hidden screws.. plus when you remove the bar, it will come off with it.. $150 for insure NO LEAKS is a small price to pay, but to each his own, right.. It doesn't really leak at all that's the thing. I just want to take the little bit of rust off of it.

Taking it off is well worth the piece of mind. When I did mine(which was not salvagable) I got one from a 91-92 car, sand blasted it, and hit it with about 3 coats of primer, three coats of base, and 3 coats of clear. I do NOT want to see that thing rust anytime soon.

Re: t top rust fix

As long as your careful when you take the weather stripping off, other than what you stated you should only need a flat head screwdriver and some weatherstrip adhesive.

The screwdriver is to aid in removal and installation of the weatherstripping.

Re: t top rust fix

Well I got the t bar off and sanded down yesterday. Hopefully I can get it bondoed tonight on one of the metal seams that has some rust in it then paint it soon. I got some clear coat for it that is supposed to stop rust so it should help in the future.

There are some sort of caulking strips that the factory uses to re-seal this bar to the car. If not done properly, water will get in and the bar and body will start rusting again FAST.

I have yet to see a detailed drawing of where you're actually supposed to put the stuff though. Not exactly something you can just look up in a manual either.

Anyone successfully re-sealed one of these before that would care to help?
