Wanted to see: Cowl Induction hoods
I'm looking to build a cold air induction set up for my Coupe and as much as I don't want to add a cowl hood, it looks like that's the only (practical) way to do it.
I'd like to see who has what for hoods and how you've sealed things up to the carb/air filter.
The cowl hood I prefer the most would be along the lines of a 1st gen Camaro with a small rise (1 5/8" according to GM). I like the overlap into the windshield too.
Post your pics.

I also like the Sunoco hood.

Re: Wanted to see: Cowl Induction hoods
I havnt built an air box yet. I just bought the tallest filter assembly I could to stick up the farthest I could to suck in the most cool air I could. But I do plan on making a box and this thread will help me decide a good option too!
I know I saw someone post up they used a circular pan almost like a stainless baking pan. Cut it. Use a rubber sealing and wham done. I think I saw it in the TBI section...

[quote=skinny z;4956900] sorry, mine is a 4.5" cowl, doesnt help much since its a bird, but the rear is 4.5" and it slowly tapers down from there towards the front.

mine is a fiberglass harwood 4 inch hood. i must say it does block alot of your view. in my opinion anything over a 4 inch is very difficult to see over. but im use to the hood now.

3 inch Harwood

Then here's the pan I did for it. Used Moroso's replacement foam and a flat sheet of aluminum.

Those are ALL fine looking cars (even the Firebirds!).
I found this hood at a distributor (just out of Chicago) for AMD sheet metal . Advertised as a 2" cowl. Good deal too with $100 off the on-line price at AMD. About $350 taxes in and I can pick it up and save the shipping.

Re: Wanted to see: Cowl Induction hoods
I wish someone offered a steel cowl that extends towards the windshield like some of the fiberglass ones, like the Harwood one do.
For ease of mounting and every day use I'd prefer a steel hood over a glass one, even if the glass one is only about 1/3rd of the weight.
As for optimizing airflow from a cowl hood, would this be thinking too complicated?

I think it should be fairly easy to reproduce and slightly improve on the design for a few $ on fiberglass and a bit of work. Only real benefit over as simple a setup as EvilCartmans, which definately looks like the quickest good working solution, would be that you can fit this using the original aircleaner holding equipment.

Re: Wanted to see: Cowl Induction hoods
I had thought about opening up the firewall, (in an attempt to keep my flat hood) however the distributor is directly below (limiting the available space) and the windshield wiper motor is just off to the side posing another restriction.
Now if you were to be creative and build something similar ( as you suggest) then you may provide solutions to the space limitation problem.
The cowl hood solves that.

If ADM bought out Goodmark, they revised the tooling to provide (what I hear) is a higher quality product.

Re: Wanted to see: Cowl Induction hoods
I'm running Glasstek hood I bought off eBay. Seller was reselling it because it had 2 broken corners on the front when it arrived to him. It took me a few days to fix it, but turned out nice. I didn't care for the 1/2"+ thick edges as it covered most of the turn signals so I ground that back to about 1/4" and filled it in for a nice flush finish.

I have installed pictures on Facebook, but I can't get to them here from work to post them. I haven't had it painted yet or built an air pan as I'm still working on getting the motor tuned and will be going through some spacers eventually. No sense in building a pan just to find out I need to redo it for a spacer height change.

Re: Wanted to see: Cowl Induction hoods
This hood on my TA is a little too much for my taste but that's what it took to cover the big block with an RPM Air Gap intake.
I would think half that height would be enough for the 353 and Air Gap.

Re: Wanted to see: Cowl Induction hoods
From the feedback I have from a friend who just purchased an ADM hood for his 67 Chevelle, the ADM piece is of better quality than the Goodmark one. He had fitment problems with his Goodmark hood and ditched it in favour of ADM.
If ADM bought out Goodmark, they revised the tooling to provide (what I hear) is a higher quality product.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not disrespecting your hood. I'm just relaying someone else's experience. What I like about the whole deal is that there's at least an acceptable hood available for a decent price.

Re: Wanted to see: Cowl Induction hoods
I know it's not a V8 but... Here is mine.. 4" Harwood to clear the velocity stacks.

This is from inside the car, minus the air filter and the sealing foam..

and an older engine shot.. I don't have a recent one with the foam installed. The air filter side is completely sealed to the back of the hood.

With the foam sealing it to the hood my intake temps are ambient where as before it would get to 120F+ while moving and 150+ while sitting.

Re: Wanted to see: Cowl Induction hoods
3 inch on my girlfriends car-

Big piece of $hit. Got it from a big ebay seller with a lot of positive feedback. The people must have left the feedback before actually installing or painting their hoods, or were too dumb to notice the ****-poor quality. Two full days of body work got it to look like a hood at least. Spending the extra $100-150 on a name brand hood probably would have actually cost less in the end

Re: Wanted to see: Cowl Induction hoods
Even the name brands crank out crap (consider where they're made).
I went through several boxes at the supplier picking out a hood for another car and it was tough to find anything that didn't need a makeover.
That's just the way it is.

Would anyone be so kind to post the width of the Harwood cowl?
From the pictures Purple82TA posted it appears to be less then 28" wide.

Re: Wanted to see: Cowl Induction hoods
No aftermarket hood fits perfect, but this was awful. Ive had very good results on the overall quality on other installs such as glasstek, cervinis and harwood. When i say this hood was terrible, it was terrible. Its "gel coat" was like chalk, the whole cowl was actually sagged in and needed major reworking, and a ton of air pockets and pin holes filled and much more. I was almost ready to just cut my losses and trash it and buy a harwood.

Other than the ugly front lip this Harwood hood is top notch. It's over 10 years old and still looks good.

Re: Wanted to see: Cowl Induction hoods
Ok, thanks a million for measuring.
I´m going to build mine, so I needed a measurement to start with.
Thought it might have been 22".
Not sure however if I build it from sheet metal or carbonfiber though.
Sheet metal can be welded to the spare stock hood I already have, will be tricky to get the edges of the cowl rounded evenly.
Making rounded edges on a carbonfiber cowl is easy, attaching it to the steel hood will be a pain however.
Either which way, doing it right will be a lot of work.
Will then also build an aircleaner element, a little like the one I posted, that will fit in the cowl, so when closing the hood, the cowl area will be sealed around the aircleaner element like in the original cowl inductions from the 70´s
