Converting RS/early Z28 to look like 92 Z-28
Converting RS/early Z28 to look like 92 Z-28
I really love the look of the 92 Z-28s - with the spoiler and all.
So I'm looking for a perfect 92 Z (or 91 - I think they were the same).
But if I can't find one, can earlier year Zs or RSs be converted over pretty cheaply? I think the differences are pretty minor but just want to be sure.
Thanks!

You'll have to buy a whole new set of ground fx all the way around the car. The hoods are the same as the IROC hoods, they just have the blisters bolted on instead of the louvers. The 3 piece rear spoiler in the RS/IROC/82-84Z28 cars will need to be removed, and this will leave holes in obvious places on the decklid and the rear fender - those will need to be addressed. Then you can bolt on the Z28 high rise spoiler. The only other difference is the front grille.
So you need to find:
Ground fx all the way around the car
-front chin spoiler
-side skirts for each side
-door panel section of the side skirts
-rear side skirt for each side
-rear bumper cover.
Z28 or IROC hood, then if necessary acquire the "blisters"
High rise spoiler
Bowtie grille insert
The only real problem is the 91-92 ground fx were only made for 2 years, and in relatively small numbers comparatively. It's hard to find them in good shape and they're not cheap when you do find them. By expensive, I dont mean a zillion dollars, but a good front spoiler can set you back $200 easy. A new reproduction one is $210+shipping. The other pieces are all gonna be a lot easier to find in good shape, but you will still need to find them. If you can get an IROC hood with decent louvers on them, you can sell those and buy blisters and make a small profit. Those things can get kind of pricy. The blisters are much cheaper in comparison. Even on hawks the blisters are only $40 each. Bowtie grilles shouldnt be too difficult to find but I think they sold out of all the NOS ones, so you'll pay a decent amount for one, but nothing exorbitant.
If you get a 91-92 RS most of that is taken care of. You'll just need the hood and to do the spoiler conversion. But it will be slow. If you get an 85-89 well-optioned, IROC you'll need to swap all the cosmetics around but it will be a properly equipped IROC.
HOWEVER... I would say that an IROC should remain an IROC. Especially a nice, well-optioned one. But that's your call.

or just buy a cooler cowl or other hood.

just my two cents...I don't mind a clone but be sure and represent it as a clone and not the authentic car. I've got a lot more respect for a car that still has RS badging.

To be honest it will be way easier to find a 91-92 Camaro rather than go thru all that, unless you were to get an early Camaro for free or next to it. Trust me, I just did the oposite to my Firebird. Converted all the 92 ground effects to the boxier 85-90 Trans/Am ground effects. It was a bit of work...

Here ya go! Rather than converting a IROC to look like a Z28 here's a guy that took a Z28 and made it look like an IROC--now you get the best of all worlds!! And not a bad price either!

I'd suggest just trying to find a real '91-92 Z28. Or find an RS and swap out the hood and rear wing.
Re: Converting RS/early Z28 to look like 92 Z-28
Cloning has been going on for just about forever. Back in the day people were cloning 1st gen Z28's, COPO's and ZL1's. Now they're cloning third gen Z's? WTF. A friend of mine bought a fake 1st gen Z from a cloner in the NW suburbs of Chicago. Litigated for years and never seen his money back. Some of those clones were hard to detect but there is always a way to rat 'em out. It could be something as a badge or a decal, or maybe something on the dash just doesn't seem right. Maybe the speedo says 85 mph when it should be a 140 mph. You may not see it on the first pass but under close scrutiny you'll find the errors left behind. I guess you can tell I am not advocate of cloning, I think it should be punishable by death. I would even go as far to say that putting IROC wheels on anything but a true IROC is a crime against hot rodding.
