Sectional floor pan replacement

I have some rot along the PS floor pan adjacent to the rocker. The rocker is good. I think if I cut out a section 2-3 feet long and 6-8" wide under the door I would be good. Can I patch a piece this big in there or should I bite the bullet and replace the entire pan? I've got some sheet metal, 16ga and a mig. Do I need to level the car and/or brace it before I cut this much out?
