Being a body man and pro painter for a decade now, makes me want to dance on that hood in steel boots, but whatever floats your boat it's your car.

we would all like a factory or better looking paint job for our cars but the 1000 dollar minimum it costs for a simple paintjob today is way out of our budget.rents due every month.

lol i take it u meant its comming out nice?

lol a real body man is going to be spraying the car this spring time, this is just so i can drive the car around this winter with decent looking paint on it, and also im going to take the car to the boneville salt flats so i dont have to worry about the salt eating this paint up on me.

after i take the car to boneville in the spring im going to strip it and have the blue metalic and silver metalic sprayed on the car

Than don't paint it, I have been in the business for 25 years, that paint is a disaster, wait untill he wants to repaint it the correct way. The cost assosiated with prep on that job will far out weigh the savings now. Its probably just me, painting like this just makes me cringe. This is the reason third-gen owners get a bad rap, doubtful you would see this done on a first-gen, sorry rant off just urkes me.

Ehhh, it's just crazy what your doing, it's gonna take a long time to strip the car with that on it, and any and all body work you have done under it is gonna have to be stripped and redone, it's gonna end up costing you more, woulda been simples and better to get a two part epoxy primer and prime the car in it, it would seal it better then crappy house paint. Let alone the labor you have put in with 5 coats and wetanding and polishing, it just makes no sense to me.

Props for spending the time and effort to make the best of a 50$ paint job, to me it doesn't make much sense. One winter season isnt going to rip apart a car, especially when you are going to be doing body work in the spring. I hope your serious when you said the car would be repainted in the spring. Because theres no way you are stripping this paint and not having to refinish the cars body work.

If you can do this you can respray with a bc/cc system, Sherwin, kirker, dupont, Summit all have base line quality paints that can be applied from start to finish for under 400$ including supplies. You just have to spend the time and effort do some research.

i already have 2 gallons of new paint sitting in my closet.
1 gallon of each summit metalic blue and summit metalic silver both came with the right activators and reducers etc i think all in total it was 250 bucks

if i could spray the car myself i would though id only be able to spray the blue, id still have to take the car into the body shop for them to spray the silver metalic flames and do the airbrush work

ill be stripping the car this spring time after i run the car on the bonneville salt flats

Don't let them bring you down. I'm interested in seeing the final product and I think it looks pretty good so far. I painted my S10 using tractor paint 3 weeks ago and it turned out pretty nice, especially compared to before.

Project89, I have to say you are a real trouper. You just plugged along getting the job done when everyone ragged on you. Discouraged you. You have a nice car! Great job sticking with the project Not even retaliating with disrespect. In my book your a awesome person and able to hold your tongue. Kudos to you!

dosent look bad till ur upclose to it, there are places all over the car were the previous owner hit it with a grinder to take off some rust spots and then hit it with wite rattle can primer with huge runs down the side of the car.

also the roof is actually covered with latex house paint found that out when i started to sand it and the paint would peel off in strips

that came out really nice, how many coats did u do ? any wetsanding or buffing the paint?? did u have an issues with runs on the vertical surfaces ??

i will admit i am going overboard on the work im putting into this paint since its comming off anyways, but i just cant see slapping it on the car its just not me lol

lol thanks, im used to it btw, if u think im getting it bad in this thread u should see my old thread were i started to build my turbo v6 car.everyone swore that the lil 2.8 even turboed wouldnt be faster then a stock 305/350 car.
i ended up getting the last laugh since for way less then the cost of a v8 swap i now have a v6 car thats faster then the majority of f-bodys on this site.not to mention even with a 4:10 rear gear and 4500 stall converter the car still gets 36+mpg on the highway

2 coats of white and this picture was taken 2 days after painting. No wet sanding or buffing had been done and I ended up with 4 run spots and no real orange peel. My biggest problems were knats and bugs since I painted it in my driveway but they wet sanded out lol

Re: Another (50$) ultimate budget paint job thread with pics (gloss black)

man stop now and get some epoxy primmer in black and do the rest of the car with that, I stripped a boat that was done using house paint this summer and even though Im not scared of hard work I'll never do it again. EVER. It's your car but the 5 months of ok looking black paint arent worth the effort to strip it back down

Also, I painted that same boat this summer using PPG shopline and their crappiest clear this summer for less than 140 bucks for epoxy primer, base, and clear (1 gallon!) so your not really saving much money

lol i did the hood on my porch and im also doing the new rear bumper cover on it and i am getting dog and cat hair in the paint, but atleast it wetsands out.

tommorow im going to install my rear bumper cover, then pull the nose off and start on that, once thats done ill pull the front fenders and doors and do those.

after that ill have no choice but to do the roof and rear quarters outside in the driveway

Only 5 months if no quality clear coat is being used with it, as that is the only mistake I see being made in this thread. With a good clear coat protecting the rustoleum, the paint will last for an extremely long time. Without the clear coat, the rustoleum will need to be buffed every two weeks because it fades. and it will eventually succumb to the elements. I do agree though, if the intent is "just" for 5 months, then it is a complete waste of time. I would have just used White gloss rustoleum and touched up the areas that needed it just until the car hits a real booth for some real paint. Also, for anyone else considering rustoleum as a cheap alternative, at least go with their marine paint, as that is designed to battle the outside elements. Here is their marine gloss black....

At least these cheap paint jobs give me hope for when I paint my car in a month or so. I am going to buy auto paint and I have a gun and compressor.

They are what they are $50 paint jobs, you do not think in the repair business if we could use cheap paint we would? the less spent is the more made. There is a good reason that type of paint is not used in the automotive finish world.

What are you using? I have some imperfections on my plastic as well. I've used this and this in the past with good luck. Cool vid below about plastic repair here.

sorry guys i just havent touched the car in a while after i blew up the transmission.

but anyways yes i did mix it 50/50 with mineral spirits.

5 coats were necasary cause i was putting it on really thin, and wetsanding between everycoat.if u mix it 60/40% u can put it on a lil thicker and prolly do it in 3 coats.

haps man sorry forgot all about it nextime im out working on the car ill get u the info off the can

Re: Another (50$) ultimate budget paint job thread with pics (gloss black)

My car was a $75 (canadian) paint job.... I had originally paid someone 1/2 up front $1500(3000) to prep the car and then paint it but after sitting for 3 months summer was right around the corner and I wanted the car done. He basically told me where I could go. Since I had paid him the advance in cash he again told me where I could go when I asked for my money back. I ended up having to tow the car home, and prepped it myself. Lots of sanding had to be done to prep the car and right before I was ready to be able to tow it to another shop, a friend of a friend came by the house and confronted me about the guy who was supposed to paint it. He saw that I had the prep work already done for the most part. He then told me he owned his own paint shop and said that he wanted to help me out because he heard I was too nice of a guy to be ripped off like that. so for $75 he bought a can of single stage paint and a case of beer and we both finished the prep job. Since there was a compressor in the garage I had the car in we stapled plastic sheets from the ceiling and painted the car in a makeshift paint booth in the garage where the prep work was done. Even better than this... a few days later once the paint had a chance to harden a bit he came back out to the garage to inspect the paint and wasn't satisfied, so he drove back to his shop, picked up some clear, came back out and out of his own pocket applied a couple coats of clear!!!!

Then a week later I drove out to his place with the car and we wet sanded and buffed it.... Guy treated me wonderfully!!! Since then I've sent everyone I knew was looking for some paint work his way.... An eye for an eye right???

Now here's the car with its $75 paint job.

If thats not a feel good story, I dont know what is!!

Thanks I rolled it. Stripped it with 400 grit i believe or 300. Wetsand every 2 coats started at 600 and worked my way up to 2000 before i hit it with the compound. I used meguiars ultimate compound with orbital buffer and foam applicator. I also waxed it with meguiars ultimate wax and made the shine even better. Did a total of 8 light coats. I havent waxed it this winter and still looks shiny . Just take your time. Heres a video so u can see the paint a lil better .

thanks man i still havent buffed out my hood, i tried once and it dulled the paint out on me, so i figured it wasnt hard enough yet. i ended up doing one coat after i tried to buff it and left it as is, and it does look good just like it is but i deff want to be able to buff it out

its been really cold and bad weather here + blowing the transmission out of the car. once the weather gets a lil nicer ill start working on it again

the weather here is crazy we had one day were it was 68* then the next it was 20* then we got snow , last 2 weeks have been in the 30's so looking foward to the soon comming 70+ days

Just noticed your in Utah .lol i heard about the weather over there. i have family out in utah and a house down there to. Just chose to live in NJ. Im near Provo in utah how about u ? And yea its to cold to do it,,,weather has to atleast be 60..Thats the only reason i rushed mine since i was doing it in the end of september. I also never had a problem with the paint curing. I used about a 55/45 mix and i actually wetsanded 24 hours after i layed the paint . Only the last coat did i wait 3 days then sanded with 1500 and 2000 ..then compound. This spring Im going to add one more coat and sand with 2500 then 3000 . Should come out better.
