Door removal

On my '82 TA, my driver's door is done for.

I assume the removal should be easy, but I can't find anything about door removal on here.

Or on google.

And I don't know what the deal with the bottom hinge is... how do I undo it?

Many thanks, guys.

Re: Door removal

The hinges are welded to the door & bolted to the body. So you have to unbolt the door & hinge as 1 piece.

Re: Door removal

And the bottom hinge has one bolt on the outside and 2 15mm bolts on the inside, behind the kick panel and a piece of "sealing" rubber or plastic.

Re: Door removal

So I don't need to worry about anything, such as the spring?

Re: Door removal

The spring will stay with the hinge... Done 5 doors now and haven't had a problem with the spring (except when I removed it to replace the bushings and couldn't get it back in again).

Re: Door removal

I almost forgot... the one single passenger's side door I replaced because it was cheaper to get a door from a junkyard than to replace the outer skin after some a$$ punched a hole in it next to the lock to break in. If I had my 2-way pager alarm then, I might be just getting out of jail now for bashing his head in (the force he applied to the door skin would DEFINITELY have set off the alarm... Still wonder how he got through the skin without anyone hearing him POUND on the door). Stupid amateur thieves don't know anyone can break into a 3rd gen in less than 20 seconds without damaging ANYTHING... And the stupid cops didn't take the greasy fingerprints the thief left on the window...

Re: Door removal

The stupidity of people amazes me.

Moreover...

What'd he take?

Doesn't he know that he could've stolen that thing with a slide hammer and a screw?

Re: Door removal

He took my 4-month old Eclipse stereo (but left the Sony sub and Jensen amp in the back even though I had a working hatch release), and my school tools out of the back seat. Didn't touch the ignition or anything, but smashed the door and the crap out of the radio pod I HAD JUST REPLACED before putting the stereo in (and apparently also the HU connector as the REMOTE wire was still hanging in the radio pod, terminal and all. It was clearly a smash and grab. Bet he didn't know the HU was locked.

A Mitsubishi head unit? Hope he gets what's coming to him.

I really hope that crap doesn't happen to me...

But it's not often a car gets stolen around here.

Re: Door removal

No, the Eclipse brand by Fujitsu Ten (which shut their doors last year)... It was a CD-3402 (I have another now) and was later replaced by their 5435. With a $100 Panasonic in the middle (since the stock HU I was given by a mechanic friend of the family absolutely sucked and the tape mechanism was broken and my stock one blew the rear channel due to a crossed wire ).

Re: Door removal

Well, I found exactly what I was looking for...

The day after I needed it.

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/body...r-removal.html

I don't understand why it wasn't the first to pop up, that's exactly what I searched.

... how do I get that kick panel off?

Re: Door removal

One screw in the middle of it and possibly another by the sill plate... Lift the bottom and pull up and back.

Re: Door removal

What's the box...

More specifically, what's a "window relay"?

It's not an automatic window...

Re: Door removal

No window relays on your car... On mine, maybe (I just put them in today).

The box is the door lock relay...

Re: Door removal

... for an electric door lock?

Is it just an add-on, and do I need it?

My dented door that came off had no such thing...

Can I cut the wires and be rid of it, and have it all be good?

Re: Door removal

I'd leave it in case you want to add keyless entry later. It's not really in the way of anything other than the door bolts.

I'm assuming, of course, that this box has a single screw on the left side and about a dozen wires coming out of the bottom... And it's metal.

The way I like it.

Re: Door removal

One last thing...

Is there an easy way to take the spring out and put it in, without special tools?
