driver's side seatbelt jammed, won't retract.

The belt is most of the way out. If you pull on it only about 2" of belt comes out and it stops. That same 2" is all it will retract, then it stops.

Repeatedly pulling on it and letting it retract hasn't helped, it's still jammed.

Is there anything I can do to unjam it? If not how do I replace the retractor?

Have you tried opening the door? Seriously. Opening the door usually helps it retract, although I have no idea why. I imagine it's the vibration. Open and close the door a few times and see if it helps. The little weight thingies inside can get all boogered up and sometimes a rythmic pattern of tugging can help too.

This happened to mine also. I took the headliner down and took the cover off the seatbelt mechanism. If you play with it a little bit, you sill see a long pin the size of a paper clip. This pin is whats stops the belt when you tug on it. Its not what keeps the belt tight during a sudden stop. On mine, I just removed this pin. Now the belt stays snug to my chest the way I like it and it no longer gets stuck to where it wont retract.

This had happened so often on my Firebird that I know what to do to fix it. My mechanic told me that he hated that about F-bodies b/c they all do it. I'm being serious when I say this, do kind of a really hard snap type pull and it will retract from that. Ever since I had done that last time it hasn't once screwed up or gotten lock in there. Weird advice but it works.

i've actually pulled the headliner down a little just enough to see the pully type thing it's on, and take flat head screwdriver, and actually push on the tooth of the gear on the side, backwards to help rewind it. once it gets a little help backwards, it will retract it automaticly.

Subject: PRODUCT SAFETY CAMPAIGN 85C23(A) FRONT SEAT BELT SHOULDER BELT RETRACTOR

Model and Year: 1983, 1984, 1985 CHEVROLET CAMARO MODELS
TO: ALL CHEVROLET DEALERS

# THIS BULLETIN IS BEING REISSUED TO SUPERSEDE PRODUCT CAMPAIGN BULLETIN 85C23 DATED APRIL, 1986. UPON RECEIPT OF THE REISSUED BULLETIN 85C23(A), DESTROY 85C23.

The National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act, as amended, provides that each vehicle which is subject to a recall campaign of this type must be adequately repaired within a reasonable time after the owner has tendered it for repair. A failure to adequately repair within 60 days after tender of a vehicle is prima facie evidence of failure to repair within a reasonable time.

If the condition is not adequately repaired within a reasonable time, the owners may be entitled to an identical or reasonably equivalent vehicle at no charge or to a refund of the purchase price less a reasonable allowance for depreciation.

To avoid having to provide these burdensome solutions, every effort must be made to promptly schedule an appointment with each owner and to repair their vehicle as soon as possible. As you will see in reading the attached copy of the letter which is being sent to owners, the owners are being instructed to contact the nearest Chevrolet Zone Office if their dealer does not remedy the condition within five days of the mutually agreed upon service date. If the condition is not remedied within a reasonable time, they are instructed on how to contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

DEFECT INVOLVED

General Motors has determined that a defect which relates to Motor Vehicle Safety exists in some 1983, 1984 and 1985 Chevrolet Camaro models. In some of these vehicles, dislocation of a spring cover in the shoulder belt retractor will allow the shoulder belt to be extended but will not allow it to retract again. While the inertial feature that "locks" the shoulder belt in the event of an accident and the operation of the lap belt are not affected, if the amount of slack introduced in the shoulder belt is more than recommended in the owner's manual it is likely that the injuries to the upper body and head will be increased in the event of an accident.

VEHICLES INVOLVED

The involved vehicles are all 1983, 1984 and 1985 Chevrolet Camaro models within the following vehicle breakpoints:
