proper way to remove a door

Hi, I was wondering when you remove a 3rd gen door, do you wanna unbolt the hinges from the body or the door? In other words, when your done taking them off, will the hinges be left on the door or the body of the car. The goal would be the easiest way to re-align it when you put them back on. I would be removing them to paint the door jams and don't want to mess up the fresh jams with a mis-aligned door. Thanks...

Re: proper way to remove a door

Every time I have done it I left the hinges on the door. The 2 doors I bought off of craigslist also had the hinges attached to the door when I bought them.
All of them went off and on easy enough.

Hope that helps.

oh, that makes sense. I can't look at the car cause i'm in Afghanistan. Just trying to get a game plan for when i get home. How hard is it to align the doors back up. Is there alot of adjustment there, or just bolt back on?

Re: proper way to remove a door

Are the plug connectors inside the doors or inside the car?

I assume there is a single connector, rather than having to disconnect mirrors, windows and locking separately?

The connectors are all inside the door. Remove the door panel and unplug the power windows, power locks and mirror (if you have any of these). Then remove them with the rubber boot from inside the door jam. You can pull each wire through, but it isn't fun, but I have done it.

Never assume w/cars! There is not a single connector. That would make good sense, but it is not cost effective. Like I said take off the door panel and unplug the wires. He's right you can pull the wires through and it is not any fun...

Thanks for the tips.

Re: proper way to remove a door

I cheated and suspended my door from a rafter and jacks, and just stretched the harness out to suit. There was just enough barely length to change the hinge pins and repaint the jamb (only did rh door).

Couldn't believe there weren't connectors inside the cabin like pretty much every other car I have owned or worked on - pita!

aligning the doors suck a$$ im still working on aligning the one that I replaced on a camaro. it is the worst vehicle to do it on because the doors weigh so much.
