lexan vs glass t-top weight

Since I cant find any fiberglass ones, thought about replacing my glass t-tops with the lexan parts the oem offered for them, removing the oem latching mechanism, and dzus-ing them on, then painting them black, and have them airbrushed to resemble oem. Car is a big tire / backhalf bracket car.

Anyone know a actual number for weight of glass vs lexan

Re: lexan vs glass t-top weight

I'm going to assume you are running a big mph in the quarter. If I can get out to the garage I'll weigh the 2 diff types for you.
Just to let you know tho I have had the lexan tops center part pop out of the center bar at "elevated" speeds. I think it was around 150-160mph ish..
I would prolly stick with the glass even tho they weigh a bit more..

Re: lexan vs glass t-top weight

I appreciate your time.

The car has been 140, at 3300lbs, and should come in around 2700lbs if i ever get it back in one piece.

I plan on removing the entire latch assembly from the lexan (if possible, i havent looked at my glass ones yet) and using 4 Dzus fasteners in each corner, of each insert.

Re: lexan vs glass t-top weight

I'm not sure of the weight differance, but I don't think you would need to paint the lexan tops if you did not want to-they are dark. I seen some over the weekend and i thought they were painted over till I look from the inside.

seems the ones i have seen in the past werent real nice, if i can clean them up and polish them, leaving them "clear" is fine, but rough ones that need work will more than likely get painted. now i just have to find a set.

On a side note, i will have 2 passenger side, and 1 drivers side glass t-tops that will need a new home if i can find lexan ones, just sayin

Re: lexan vs glass t-top weight

Is this each t-top, or both together? If together 6lbs up top is decent, but individually 12lbs up top is significant.

I dunno. I just collect weights when people post them. For those, it was not listed as each or in pairs. If anybody can weight theirs & confirm the weights & clarify individual or pairs, that would be great.

Re: lexan vs glass t-top weight

I would assume 6lbs each.. Lexan must be lighter than 3lbs each I would think?

Re: lexan vs glass t-top weight

From my bathroom scale I get:

Lexan = 11 lbs
Glass = 16 lbs

That is for each one individually, not by pair. Sorry if that makes things even more confusing. :dunno:

Looks like both my #s were right, sort of. #s were good but not quite labeled right. I only had down what others had Posted & if they didn't specify Single/Pair? That was all I had to go by. Sorry. Excel chart fixed now.

22 would be good for a pair of Lexan & the 16 would be good for a single glass.

Re: lexan vs glass t-top weight

That is 10lbs of savings all the way up there in the CG. This is a pretty good mod if you're just racing a t-top car, I don't think they would hold up to street abuse and weather elements. Plus they tend to crack from tons of power I am guessing that's why GM stopped using them?
