Vin Locations to verify numbers matching
Vin Locations to verify numbers matching
I'm looking at an 86 IROC How can you tell if the body and frame are numbers matching? I know about the windshield vin and the radiator support tag with a partial vin # and the vin on the drivers door sticker. I'm told that there should be two numbers on the frame somewere, and what about the motor and transmission.

I hope you have an automatic or this won't be any use to you.

When I stripped my '88 down I found VIN stickers EVERYWHERE!
There's one on the inside of the rear bumper cover, under the rear carpet, on the inside of the sail panel behind the driver's speaker "pod", a factory "OK" inspection paper tucked under the front carpet near the radio (can't believe I missed it when I put in the Kenwood).
It's like a teenage chick's backpack!
There's also the standard RPO sticker in the center console (use the decoder @ www.thirdgen.org ). That will tell you what the factory engine, transmission, rear end, paint colors, interior colors, ground effects, wheels, tires, brakes, springs, options, ect. are.
The engines and transmissions aren't numbered to the car. The transmission numbers don't have ANY relation to the car, just the manufacturing date/time/location. The engine numbers (casting number on the rear driver's side of the bell housing, and assembly number on the passenger side/front of the block) can tell you what the engine was built for (year/make/model) but not the exact car.
Hope this helps,
John

87+ had VIN stickers plastered all over the car. The earlier ones did not, however.
