Putin a z28 body kit on my sport coupe need some help please
ok so i have a 11987 Sport coupe,
now i wana put a z28 body kit on it but im a lil confused on some things, the front bumper cover will bolt right on with no problems correct? i have an 85-90 front bumper cover and lip just havnt put it on yet, where im lost is the side skirt, how do they mount to the car? how would i put them on my car fi theres no place to mount them?
also i wana put the spoiler on tomorow, i know its as simple as drilling the holes but any opinions as far as how to know exactly where the holes should be drilled, anyone have exact measurements? is it a lay it on there and mark it where it should sit and just go drilling kinda thing....

I welded my own bracket to each side of the car and mounted the skirts to them. Worked pretty well.
Re: Putin a z28 body kit on my sport coupe need some help please
other then that everything should just bolt right up right?

While I don't claim to be an expert on how these bodies line up and what will just bolt up, I CAN offer advice as a fabricator on your spoiler.
If you took the spoiler off another vehicle, use it to make templates! Go back with some template paper, scissors, tape, and a marker. Trim the paper to fit the edges, mark which piece goes on which side, then mark the holes however you feel comfortable.
Hope this helps. Let me know how this comes out. I've got a similar plan with my 83.

In regard to the spoiler make a paper template of it with the holes first, then mark on the car. If you just go at with a drill there is a good chance it will end up being off by a few degrees. I've had that happen before (bumper on my old truck) and that mistake will haunt you for as long as you own the car.
The side skirts are mounted with two metal clips on the rear, which you will either need to make or scavenge. They are a pretty standard looking body work clip. The front is attached with some sheet metal screws.

Then do it the opposite way. Take paper and make a template of the spoiler pieces themselves. Then line THOSE templates onto the car body, paying close attention to the edges of the spoiler so it lines up right.

Re: Putin a z28 body kit on my sport coupe need some help please
The paper template is probably the best and easiest way to do it. Just make sure that there is a mark or guide line you can transfer to the car to line up the paper. Then mark the holes and drill them. The spoiler side pieces on my friends Z28 were slightly bigger on the sides than the top hole.
The template paper for the center piece should be centered on the hatch but I would make sure of where the holes are drilled in from the edge. Once again marks to align it on the car properly is important.
Take your time. If you check and double check with the templates you should be fine.

like i said i hav no car to make templates on so im kinda lost, i may just do it how i did my z24, EYE BALL IT! i wasnt wanting to do it that way bc i could mess up but wen i installed a stock z24 spoiler from a 91-94 on my 88 i literaly JUST eye balled it and it came out perfect, perfectly straight where i wanted it, i even measure it after and it was square as could be

You don't NEED the car it came off of. You can do it the opposite way. Take some template paper to the bottom of the spoiler itself, and mark the ends of it. Then you can place THAT template on the body and go to town. It'll be closer than just eyeballing, for sure. Worst case scenario: you would have to elongate one of the holes a little and then use a fender washer when bolting it on.

Re: Putin a z28 body kit on my sport coupe need some help please
Another note: When making the paper template, make witness marks on both the template and the spoiler piece in case you need to go back and double-check the shape and hole placement. A sharpie mark on a piece of tape will be fine if you're uncomfortable with marking the spoiler itself. Once you get the template marked off the inside of the spoiler pieces, tape it to the body. That should be pretty close. Just be sure to double and triple check it.

Re: Putin a z28 body kit on my sport coupe need some help please
I will clarify this for you. Take a piece of butchers paper and put it on the ground, then put the spoiler on it, now trace an outline of the spoiler on it and cut it out. Now you have a blank foot print of the spoiler, all you need to do now is locate any mounting holes in the spoiler and cut/mark those on the paper. Then tape the paper footprint/template on your car where you want it (measure!) and trace the holes with sharpie (or chalk if you want to be cool like that) on the trunk lid.
Make sure you find the center of each hole mark and use a punch to make a small indent so the drill bit goes where you want it to. Drill bits are really good at following holes.

Re: Putin a z28 body kit on my sport coupe need some help please
Flash2042 is right. Make the template off the spoiler itself. I would get it made so that the paper can sit neatly over the studs and mark on the paper a set location on the paper that is easily transferable by the shape of things. Mark at the edge of the lip so the paper template lines up properly with the edge of the hatch. Same around the lights. One thing I noticed on my friends Z28 is that the holes were about 3/8 or 7/16 " but I would stay as small as possible as long as the spoiler can easily come off or on.

I'm not sure if this will work (it did on my 200sx when I had that piece of junk) but you could try crawling into the hatch/truck from the back seat and taking off the interior panels and jimmying the latch mechanism. Another option is taking it to a locksmith and doing it that way.
I would make sure there is someone there to lift up on the trunk if you get in the trunk, the hydraulic assist things are probably shot.

That is the only way I know without the rear plastic being out.

Sounds like it's time to just throw a v8 in it, IMO. That 3.1 has some serious bottom end issues.

seen a couple 3.1 m5. 3.1 A4 with t-tops and hardtop '91 & '92s usually being sold because they need some mechanical or cosmetic repair under 3,000 & I've about about gettin one just to still be able to drive a Camaro white getting 20+mpg because my Z28 is in storage due to the 10mpg I get when I drive it
its really hard to not floor it when you have a monster V8 under the hood Re: Putin a z28 body kit on my sport coupe need some help please

Lookin good! How big of a pain was it? I'm going to do the 92 conversion to mine as well. Do the turn signals have the same socket or is there some splicing involved?
Re: Putin a z28 body kit on my sport coupe need some help please
turn signals are the same socket, it wasnt that bad at all, didnt even have to jack the car up, im only lik 5'6" so i could crawl under the bumper, u have 5 bolts that bolt it to the fender u can get to from under neath, then lik 5 up top by the headlights and its off

nice job. although it looks like everybody elses car now. spoilerless sportcoupes just dont exist anymore and now you took a pretty darn clean looking one and made it into a generic lookin 3rdgen. but good work though. i would have traded you an 89 rs (which is what yours looks like now) for yours.
