Decal Removal

not on a thirdgen, but i figure it's all the same. my jimmy has a decal stripe ,about 4" tall, along the bottom of the body and across the front and rear bumper covers. i tihnk it'd look alot better without it. can i remove it without hurting the paint under it? i know there is decal removers but the ones i've saw seemed pretty harsh and i was afraid it's hurt the paint. if it matters it's black. any ideas or experiences? thanks

If it's like a sticker, sometimes you can just take a blow dryer and warm it up for a little bit, then pill it right off. That's just a guess though. No experience talking here!

Don't even waste your time w/a home hair dryer--tried that w/my Formula, tried to take the lettering off the door--took forever! Better off using some kind of industrial type heater(dryer)just don't hold it too close or for too long. Removed mine w/a body shop type.

on my truck i took all the stickers and emblems(stuck on with double sided tape) off by soaking them with warm soapy water for a while, then used a plastic card like an ID or credit card to slowly and carefully scrape them off(while continuously pouring soapy warm water with a sponge on the area) and I removed all left over residue from the stickers or tape by rubbing the area with a clean terry cloth and a very good reliable car wax. I used Prestone Bullet Wax. It was a quite slow process, but left no marks or scratches. But if you scrape the card at the wrong angle, you might leave small hairline scratches.

The best and only, non-damaging way to do this is really fun!! Can't think of a better way to spend my weekend!! Let a couple of fingernails grow a little and keep at it. No matter how bored or upset you get. You'll only get about 3mm at a time, but if you don't want to repaint.....

Try all other methods, but I believe that you'll find this to work the best.

NO WAY!

The 3M decal remover does seem quite harsh for paint, BUT I have used it numerous times because I am amazed with how well it works. I took all the decals off of my white truck a few years ago and it looks great still! I took some decals off of my black Camaro too, and that still looks great. Decals curl right up and peel right off, NO EFFORT whatsoever. You won't be dissappinted, TRUST ME.

Gotto agree on this one, I buy several company vehilces each year and they are all covered with logo's and numbers and the commercial removers 3M and others do do the job without hurting the paint. Be careful though depending on the color of the vehicle you may have noticable paint fading. The process still takes some time. I would say you might spend 4 to 6 hours removing all of the stickers off of a camero Z28 or Trans Am

Ede, hit it with a hairdryer then apply some Goof -off. I've used goof -off on fresh unwaxed paint and it did no damage.

Worked at a dealership for a while, and the trick we used to take old decals off was quite simple. We had a big round chunk of rubber we attached to a drill and used it as an eraser. The decals just rubbed right off, and the rubber came off no problem. Easy and quick, no damage.

Ede, Use a hair dryer to heat the decal as you are pulling it off. No chemicals needed. It worked for me.

soak the decal in WD 40 then take a credit card or the like and scrape it off. my dad just brought a new truck and took the dealer stickers off doing it this way and i've taken the dealer stickers off of my 91 RS using the same technique. very inexpensive and doesn't hurt the paint one bit. if it helps the truck is white and silver(took off black stickers) teal green 'maro wit white stickers.

You guys are all insane. Use a FRESH Razor...Take your time and just scrape the decal off. Do it at a shallow angle or else youll bite into the paint.

Thats 20 yrs of experience in the auto restyling trade talking.

Well, I just did mine and I used a paint scraper and a blow dryer. Took me an hour to get all the birds, 5.0 decals and the Formula letters off my car. Left some glue, but that came off with some hot water and an SOS pad. I cut into the paint nicely on one spot, but it doesnt matter because the cars going in to get painted on Monday!

ede, There is one good response so far and that's Hummer. It's called a stripe eraser. It attaches to a drill. It's easy and fast. Will not damage your paint. Do not use chemicals or a razor. 20 years experience and someone still uses a razor? That person must crap in an outhouse too. 3M makes one but i think the other 3M posts are talking about the chemical spray and that's out. Very messy and toxic as hell. Any body shop supply store can set you up. About $20.

What about those clay bars? I used one to get bits of tar and tree sap off and it was amazing.
