Is there a free site on the web giving instructions on heatercore replacement. Could you give me an Idea of the time required to complete this chore? How many busted Knuckels? etc.

Yeh, the heater core is a huge pain in the *** . I pretty much had to rip every part of the dash apart just to find it (it is basically in the middle of the car, maybe a little to the passenger side) and some of the screws were nearly impossible to get at. But it can be done if you patience. If you have any quetions, you can e-mail me.

 

on a bird I heard it was a little tougher than on a camaro. Took me an hour and a half first time ever doing it. If there ever is a next time, 30 minutes tops. Actually very easy, just a pain in the a$$. Worst part about it was the top bolt for the core cover (I did not use it when I reinstalled). Anyway, drain system, remove two heater hoses from inside engine compartment, remove lower dash cover, there you will see the heater core cover, remove those bolts (top one is a bastard and will take all the time), then, from what a remember, there should be a couple bolts holding in the core on a bracket type thing, remove those and pull out core. Reverse instructions to re-install.

Took me about 45 minutes to do mine. It was the first time I ever did it. I did mine by going under the passenger side hush panel.
One of the previous owners cut the plastic housing cover in half, which made it easy to gain access to the heater core.

I just changed mine out last weekend as a matter of fact. I heard horror stories about it. Spfff. Took around 30 minutes to get it out, 20ish to put it back in.

I just took all the bolts out except that top one and ripped the freaking cover off. Broke right at the bolt. There was not way I was going to get that sucker w/o a decent bit more work. It went back on darn near perfect too though.

LOL, kinda a jury riggin' way to do it I guess. Not exactly the recommended removal proccess...

8 hours sounds right unless your going to nix the back bolt. my eight hours included the time to remove 11 years of filth from the vents and all the plastic surfaces inside the dash

Plan on removing everything center console, radio, upper dash pad speaker, drop steering column remove cluster

I changed mine this weekend on my 91 RS It took me 11 Hours to do hada rip the whole dash out center console guages everything it was hell and to make matters worse pepboys sold me the wrong part. I replaced mine two weekends ago.
I started Sunday at 13:49. Pulled the car into the garage, gathered tools, gathered drain pans. loosened clamps on heater core spigots on engine side of firewall. Removed hush panel. Removed dash pad. Removed heater core cover. Removed heater-core/heater-core-bracket assembly. Spent an hour cleaning out the completely deteriorated foam glued to the steel baffles and cleaning up all the ductwork i could get to.Took heater-core out of it's bracket assembly. Put heater-core-assembly back into heater box. tested that baffles moved correctly. put all new hoses on ... lower/upper radiator hoses, all heater hoses. Filled with water and AF and fired it up. As soon as i got the coolant level filled up it heated up very well. it bypasses on MAX AC likes it is uspposed to. i have one leak at the water pump to fix yet, but it heats great and I was done with all this stuff and all the tools were put away by 17:39.

When i bought the car a year ago it had no heat. The heater core was bypassed in a most bad way.

i would do it again in a New York minute. Second time through the job i could do it in under two hours including all the hoses.
