Sport coupe V.S. others

Simply put, what do you guys think is better. the SCs which don't have the Ground FX, or the others (Z28, I-roc, RS) with the FX. Why? are there any +s or -s? why?

Personally I'm having a hard time deciding which I like more, w/ or w/o the ground FX. I have a 85 SC but with a 87 Z28 front bumper but no side effects. I'm debating whether to leave it like that or to put the stock bumper back on.

I've heard people say that no GFXs make the car look "cleaner". I had a 92 with them and now have an 87 without them. I'm not gonna lie I like the GFXs. The car looks a little plain without them. Here's my SC right now.

Re: Sport coupe V.S. others

My 84 was an SC a birth, but I've recently added the GFX from a 92. The car looks way better now. Before it just looked plain, and boring. I always felt without the GFX it looked unfinished. The added GFX make it look lower than it really is too.

The car looks really nice. How difficult was it to put them on?

You'll need to replace both bumpers, and then for the side skirts you'll need to weld a bracket to attach the GFX too.

Overall it really wasn't that hard to do, the hard part I guess is getting the side ones on just right so they don't rub the door, but don't look too low when the door is closed.

My passenger side one rubs just a tad on one spot, irks me but not going to mess with it.

I have never been a fan of the 3rd gens without the GFX. TO me they just look cheap. I mean there are some clean nice looking SC's on here, but over all I like GFX car's.

Sexy!!! I love the new door mouldings on there, and that deep red paint.

I love my Z28's, but my first car was an 85 SC and I really am wanting another SC to daily drive. OP I would leave yours as an SC... They are unique, and your NOT trying to fake anything its not by doing so.

Re: Sport coupe V.S. others

I own an 87 SC, and as soon as I get the rest of the GFX (already have the side ones) they will be going on the car. Like cdoyle said, the car looks incomplete without them. Especially the nose as the bottom part sits higher up than the rest of the car, which looks weird. If I ever get a second SC though I would keep it as one, because having the higher nose is very convienient with things like parking blocks and steep driveways.

My favorite third gens are the 82-84 cars. Non gfx cars look really clean to me, when things like the side moldings and decals are removed. Here is mine... Not a huge fan of my wagon wheels but they helped to plant power and handle under power. I think the Sunoco hood and 5" spoiler added the little bit of flair needed to spice things up just enough to be interesting.

thank you, it means alot to me because Iv always loved the color combo on your car, actually I think your car was one of the few that got me interested in thirdgens because I saw it while googling thirdgens. And I'm sorry I wrecked it too but luckily it wasn't bad and she got a new heartbeat . If you haven't checked my build thread you might like checking it out as I try an update it daily, it's the thread, "is this 86 worth the money?"

Re: Sport coupe V.S. others

I've got an '84 Z with the slimmer gfx but only because I couldn't find a single SC or Berli in decent shape with the v8/t5/ttop combo. Love the lighter look of the non-gfx cars and they certainly are rare these days.

Re: Sport coupe V.S. others

I hate no ground fx cars. Makes me think of iron duke and v6 cars that are rusting into oblivion and smoking everywhere riding around on tiny little 14 inch wheels .

But once cleaned up, lowered, and some nice wheels are put on them (even factory 16s are fine) they really look amazing. You have to get them away from that base model look to be able to evaluate them on their aethetic merits as a pony-car/street rod type car. See 68Strat's car.

This is mw66nova's car from YEARS ago, but it looks fantastic.

Up until I actually owned one, I had a preference for the GFX cars.
Now I prefer the cleaner appearence of the coupe. I will say that a little more front spoiler wouldn't hurt though.

Re: Sport coupe V.S. others

I used to HATE the looks of my sport coupe. So much that when I was younger I put a GFx front nose on it and a z28 louvered hood. But it was really rusty so I bought my current IROC. Now I want to pull the SC out again and restore it, but put it back to the way it was. Rallye wheels and all. Thanks a lot guys!

I always thought this was the best color combo on the SC's.

I have a major hard on for one. Thinking about pulling a mw66nova and pulling gfx and making an IROC-Z or Z28 have the SC look. My craigslist app and ebay search settings are set on and 85-87 SC right now

Re: Sport coupe V.S. others

The clean lines and lower weight of a sport coupe make for a good street/strip drag car. I also like the simplicity of no ground effects to break, warp or look crooked.

Ground effects give these cars a nice pro-touring look with 17-18in wheels and lowering springs. It just depends on what look you are going for. I personally like both, probably why I have a 84 SC street/strip car and a 91 Z28 weekend cruiser.

Agreed! 17's are perfect, and 18's can pull it off as well.

Wish I had a digital camera, or camera phone back when I still had my 85. I had it on 16" 91-92 Z28's, 17" billets, and 17x9 Corvette grandsport look-a-likes.

What's nice about the IROC rims is that if you're trying to pull of the stocker/sleeper look, they're the way to go. The same thinking applies to my not having a cowl hood even though I could benefit from having one.
Just a plain old sport coupe with a single tailpipe!

Yeah thats why I ditched my cowl. My car is quick... but its not that quick. If I could drive it perfectly on radials it would be a 13.5 second car if I dumped hte clutch perfectly probably... fast, but not that fast. I liked the cowl and all but its just way too over the top for what my car is. A mild cammed, truck headed, carbed 350.

I ended up with an 82 SMC hood, now, though, so I get a relatively stock look with the light weight of a cowl. Still could use some more clearance for a big air filter... but I guess you cant have everything.

But a sport coupe with IROCs... lowered... aggressive yet... stockish... is nearly unbeatable in pure style. Just a great combination. With the 14 inch wheels... not so much.

Recent-ish, I took that picture last summer I think. I haven't changed anything on it exterior wise since then. New drivetrain is nearly buttoned up though.

Its not a Sport Coupe, but I might have just found my next project....

1985 Berlinetta 2.8l 5spd with digital dash. Has a knocking motor. Seems like its all there for pretty cheap, maybe even a straight across trade for gun I have.

If I drag this thing home I know I am in deep poopoo, but its clean, and pretty close to what I was looking for. I'm scared of the digital dash stuff since most parts for that stuff is un-obtainium... Should I?
