Rattle/Loose Power Mirrors....help!
My '89 IROC has power mirrors. When I lower the window and drive around town the driver's side mirror rattles around loose in the mirror mount. Is there a way to tighten it up without taking the entire door apart to get the mirrors off then rebuild them?
Thanks!

There are a few reasons I can think of for the mirror rattling. 1) The cross piece that holds it to the motor has come detatched. 2) The mounting bracket for the motor has either broken or become detached. These can be solved without the door coming apart. 3) The nuts holding the mirror housing to the door have come loose. Sorry, the inner door panel has to come off to fix that. But I have a question. Why are you noticing the rattling only when the window is rolled down? This makes me think it is the window guide is worn, not the mirror rattling. Good luck with it. Lon

Thanks for the info Lon. I can hear and see the mirror rattle around with the window up/down. I just hear it more with the window down. It looks to me like the mirror is loose on it's bracket/mount. I can touch the mirror and lightly move/rattle it. The mirror housing is tight on the door. How do I tighten just the mirror up?
Thanks!!

I would notice the rattling when I closed the door on my firebird. What I did is tilt the mirror all the way in and I tightened the philips head screw that becomes visible. After this my mirrors were as tight as new.

There are two styles of power mirrors. For early style (pre 87) the plastic molded piece that holds the mirror glass attaches to the electric motor with a hidden screw in the center. Unfortunately to remove the glass to service the motor requires breaking the glass to remove the screw. Once inside you can get to the 3 screws that hold the motor and motor attachment frame to the housing. You may find the frame is broken as it is only cast potmetal. Once fixed, then attach new mirror glass when done. They are available for a lot cheaper at an auto parts store such as Pep Boys than at the dealer. On the new style (87+) the molded plastic piece is attached to the motor with a cross shaped metal piece. This sometimes comes loose from the plastic it is supposed to pop into. Tilt the mirror to it's maximum to try and see behind it. You can see if the cross piece has popped free. There is the same type of pot metal frame that attaches the motor to the housing here as well. If the frame is still tight then just re-attach the cross piece. Use a rag on the mirror and carefully press it with force to re-engage it. Or use a skinny slotted screwdirver. If you can get to the piece that has popped out to push it in. There are two plastic threaded pieces attached to the back of the molded plastic piece that also have to be engaged into their drive sockets of the motor as well. If you screw up and break the glass, then replace it as I described before. Good luck, Lon.

I had the same problem Erik formula L98 had and cured it the same way. The rattle drove me nuts (short trip) but tightening the three screws cured the problem.
