Help!! A cop broke my doorlock!!!

I locked the keys in my car and he used a slim jim to open the door. When I got home I noticed that the lock would no longer unlock, when I put the key in it just kept turning w/ out unlocking the door. Any suggestions on how I can fix this? Any help is appreciated, thanks.

HERE IS A GOOD IDEA FOR THE NEXT TIME...

get a zip tie, and zip tie the key to a place uder the car on top of something, like a crossmember or up and in the bumper etc. My dad, brothers and I do this and we have yet to need to get a slimjim or something eles.

Or just put a key in your wallet.

Take your door panel off so you can see for yourself what the problem is. You won't know exactly and neither will anyone else until you look. Don't know what else to tell you except the linkage that attaches to the lock cylinder probably came off. Whether or not it's broken or can just be hooked back on is anyone's guess until you look to see. Good luck.

Actually, one of the next threads down explains the process of removing the panel.

Regarding the broken lock, the cop probably just accidentally knocked the rod that connects to the door lock off. That is what the slim jim makes contact with to open the car. It slides in and pushes down on the rod that goes from the lock to the door mechanism. It's a simple fix, except for the pain in the butt of getting your hands inside the door to put the hook of the rod back on to the lock.

hopefully it's just what has been said, the linkage came out, but if for some reason it's the lock tumbler that broke, don't worry, just go to a junk yard and get a new tumbler mechanisim, you can have it rekeyed to match your existing key and install it again.

Thanks for the help. I think that he did just disconnect the cable, that would explain why I hear a rattle in my door when I go over bumps. I kinda figured it would be something that is harder to get to than fix.
Oh yeah, I got one of those magnetic key boxes and hid an extra key under my car, so I won't have to worry about it happening again.

Brad, be carefull with a magnetic hide a key. You know how our cars ride and many times they don't hold over hard bumps. I lost two before i started using duct tape to tape the key in my secret location. I also hide an ignition key in the car in case i loose my key's altogether, i can still drive away.

We have key boxes on all of our vehicles that are supposed to be in a similar place on all. It takes me about half an hour to find the ones that my dad placed. So, its not all that bad to tell people.

I just keep extra keys in my wallet. I've done that ever since I've been driving. I lock myself out all the time.

My favorite is putting a spare key in your wallet and leaving your wallet in your car when you lock your self out. That sucks.

The guy I bought mine from put one in a hose that he put underneath the gas filler and hid with a piece of tape. I'm guessin he forgot it cause I didn't even notice it until I was repainting it.

you can always use a speaker magnet the one i had was on there for 3 years and up until my wreck it never came off,i guess it takes a 45 mph collision to knock it loose.

I haven't done it, but I heard of the duct-tape-a-key method with a twist on it- spray the duct tape and the area around it with undercoating, so it blends in to the underside of the car.

My key's in my wallet, next to my .. uh... hm, maybe that's not a good spot for it!
